The **Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer)** plan to invest approximately **€320 million in military infrastructure across Lower Austria over the next four years**, creating significant opportunities for regional construction companies, industrial suppliers and defense technology businesses. The investment plans were detailed on October 29 by Brigadier Georg Härtinger, the military commander of Lower Austria, as Austrian authorities seek to connect growing defense expenditure with domestic economic development.

The announcement follows a series of five regional procurement events attended by approximately 470 business representatives in September 2026\. Organized by the Lower Austria Military Command, the regional Chamber of Commerce and economic development agency ecoplus, the initiative focused on helping local companies participate in military procurement and infrastructure projects.

The investments form part of Austria's **Aufbauplan 2032+**, the Bundesheer's long-term modernization program covering military equipment, facilities and technological capabilities.

## €160 Million Planned for Lower Austria's Industrieviertel

A substantial portion of the investment will be concentrated in the Industrieviertel region south of Vienna, where the Bundesheer plans to spend approximately €160 million over the next four years.

The region hosts several important Austrian military installations, including the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, the Burstyn barracks in Zwölfaxing and the military clothing facility in Brunn am Gebirge.

According to the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce, planned projects include additional storage facilities, modernization of military accommodation and sanitary infrastructure, new workshops and garages for military vehicles and weapons, and investments intended to improve energy independence at military installations.

Further investments worth approximately €10.5 million are planned for the Mostviertel region. These include construction and renovation work at Ostarrichi barracks in Amstetten and additional protective equipment requirements at the Birago barracks in Melk.

The €320 million regional investment figure represents planned infrastructure expenditure rather than contracts already awarded to suppliers.

## 470 Business Representatives Explore Military Contracts

The Bundesheer's increasing investment activity is generating considerable interest among Austrian companies seeking opportunities in defense procurement.

During September, approximately 470 representatives attended procurement events in St. Pölten, Hollabrunn, Waidhofen an der Thaya, Amstetten and Neunkirchen.

The meetings provided information about planned military projects, public procurement procedures and requirements for companies interested in becoming Bundesheer suppliers.

**Wolfgang Ecker**, president of the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce, identified opportunities for construction companies, electrical engineering firms, heating and sanitation contractors, and industrial manufacturers supplying communications equipment, specialized components and technical textiles.

Austrian Defense Minister **Klaudia Tanner** emphasized the importance of retaining domestic economic value from defense procurement and infrastructure projects.

Lower Austria Governor **Johanna Mikl-Leitner** similarly highlighted the region's industrial capabilities, technology companies and research institutions as potential participants in military supply chains.

## Lower Austria Already Hosts One-Third of the Bundesheer

Lower Austria is one of the most important regions for Austrian military infrastructure, hosting approximately one-third of the country's armed forces.

According to the regional Chamber of Commerce, the Bundesheer maintains 17 barracks and more than 100 military properties across the state.

The investment program builds on existing modernization projects, including the expansion of military aviation infrastructure.

As [AdriaDefense previously reported](https://www.adriadefense.com/austria-expands-langenlebarn-base-for-36-aircraft-aw169-fleet/), Austria is expanding Langenlebarn Air Base in Lower Austria to accommodate 24 of its planned 36 Leonardo AW169 Lion helicopters. The project includes new hangars, aprons and supporting facilities.

Military infrastructure spending also extends beyond traditional barracks construction. Modern armed forces increasingly require resilient energy supplies, maintenance facilities, specialized storage capacity and communications infrastructure to support new equipment.

The latest regional announcement does not provide a complete project-by-project breakdown of the €320 million investment program or identify specific companies selected to perform the work.

## Austrian Government Seeks Stronger Domestic Defense Supply Chains

The investment plans are closely connected to the regional **Wirtschaft & Sicherheit** initiative launched in autumn 2025 by the Lower Austrian government, the Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Austrian Industries' regional organization and ecoplus.

The initiative aims to connect domestic businesses with national and international defense supply chains while supporting research, technological innovation and employment.

Ecoplus representative **Claus Zeppelzauer** said the next priorities include expanding research and innovation projects, improving connections between companies and strengthening Lower Austria as a location for security-related technologies.

For smaller Austrian businesses, the procurement events are intended to improve access to information about government tenders and the requirements needed to compete for contracts.

The Bundesheer's planned €320 million infrastructure expenditure represents a potential source of sustained regional demand, although actual commercial opportunities will depend on the publication of individual tenders, procurement decisions and project implementation schedules.
