**Austria's armed forces face at least 100,000 cyberattacks against their servers every day, according to the country's new Chief of the General Staff, Harald Vodosek, who has identified cyber threats and drone attacks as two of the most immediate security risks facing Austria.**

In an interview published by Austrian newspaper *Der Standard* on October 7, Vodosek said the daily figure represented a lower estimate of the attacks targeting military systems.

He also warned that Austria's critical infrastructure, including energy suppliers and healthcare providers, faces persistent cyber threats.

The general did not provide a technical breakdown of the reported incidents or disclose how many resulted in successful intrusions.

## Austrian Military Chief Warns of Russian Hybrid Threats

Vodosek assessed the current threat to Austria from Russian hybrid warfare as medium to high, pointing to cyber operations, disinformation campaigns and sabotage activities affecting European countries.

He described the spread of false information about government institutions and political officials as another component of hybrid activity aimed at influencing public debate and decision-making.

The general also referred to recent sabotage incidents across European Union and NATO countries and a drone-related incident at Leipzig Airport in Germany.

His assessment comes amid growing European concern over the vulnerability of military networks, transport infrastructure and essential public services.

## Cyberattacks and Drones Among Austria’s Main Security Concerns

According to Vodosek, cyberattacks and drones currently represent the most significant immediate threats to Austria.

He warned that attacks against electricity, gas and water infrastructure could disrupt essential services on a large scale.

A prolonged power outage in Vienna, for example, could have serious consequences for the city and its residents. Vodosek also highlighted Austria's exposure to disruptions in neighboring countries, particularly Germany and Italy, because of interconnected infrastructure networks.

The warnings concern potential vulnerabilities rather than confirmed successful attacks on those systems.

## Air Defense and Cybersecurity Remain Procurement Priorities

The new military chief also addressed Austria's defense modernization program and the financial pressures affecting planned acquisitions.

Vodosek said air defense and cybersecurity remain priorities, although budget constraints mean some other procurement projects will have to be postponed.

Major programs, including the replacement of Austria's Eurofighter aircraft and the expansion of ground-based air defense, will require additional discussions between the Ministry of Defence and the government over financing.

Vodosek reiterated his assessment that Austria would require 36 combat aircraft to provide adequate air defense capabilities, compared with its current fleet of 15 Eurofighters.

However, no final decision has been made on the number of replacement aircraft.

He also acknowledged that an investment funding gap could begin emerging in 2028 under the military's current financial planning.

Vodosek took over as Austria's Chief of the General Staff at the end of September, succeeding Rudolf Striedinger. He previously served as the country's National Armaments Director and oversaw military procurement and modernization programs.
