# Bosnia’s BNT Launches Development of New 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s BNT-TMiH is moving ahead with the development of a new 155mm self-propelled howitzer, marking one of the company’s most ambitious efforts to expand from conventional artillery manufacturing into complete mobile weapon systems.

The Novi Travnik-based defence manufacturer is entering a new development programme centered on a NATO-standard 155mm artillery system. Local reporting indicates that the planned weapon is expected to achieve a range exceeding 40 kilometres, while approximately BAM 7 million (€3.6 million) has been associated with the development programme.

BNT has not yet publicly released the full technical configuration of the new system.

However, the company has previously presented a 155mm self-propelled howitzer concept. Information published by BNT describes a system with a range of around 40 kilometres, computerised GPS-assisted fire control and an automatic loading system capable of handling six rounds.

It is not yet clear whether the newly announced programme represents the further development of this earlier concept or a substantially redesigned platform.

## From artillery manufacturer to complete weapon system

The programme represents a potentially important step for BNT.

The company already has decades of experience in artillery production and heavy military engineering, including large-calibre weapon systems, mortars, rocket launchers, hydraulics and precision machining.

Its portfolio includes the M94 155mm towed howitzer, providing BNT with an existing industrial base in NATO-standard large-calibre artillery.

A modern self-propelled howitzer, however, requires considerably broader system integration. Beyond the gun itself, the platform must combine mobility, recoil management, ammunition handling, navigation, communications and digital fire-control capabilities into a single weapon system.

Successfully completing the programme would therefore move BNT further up the defence manufacturing value chain, from producing individual artillery systems and components toward delivering an integrated mobile artillery platform.

## BNT enters the programme during strong expansion

The new artillery project comes during a period of significant growth for the Bosnian manufacturer.

BNT recently secured a contract valued at approximately €31.5 million, a deal expected to occupy a substantial share of the company's production capacity over the coming year.

The customer and products covered by the contract have not been publicly disclosed.

The company has also recorded strong financial growth. BNT generated approximately BAM 41.8 million (€21.4 million) in revenue in 2025, compared with BAM 34.7 million a year earlier, representing one of its strongest performances in decades.

Management expects continued expansion, with annual revenue potentially approaching BAM 100 million (€51 million) in 2027 if current growth and order levels are sustained.

## Potential international cooperation

BNT has also been exploring international industrial cooperation around future weapons programmes.

Recent discussions with foreign defence industry representatives have included possibilities for joint development and production of new systems, while local reports have suggested that partners from the Middle East could potentially participate in the self-propelled howitzer programme.

No foreign partner for the project has yet been officially identified.

Such cooperation could be important. While BNT possesses substantial experience with artillery manufacturing, developing a competitive modern self-propelled system requires capabilities extending from the vehicle platform and powertrain to digital fire control, communications and automated ammunition handling.

## Entering a rapidly expanding artillery market

The timing could provide BNT with an opportunity.

European demand for 155mm artillery systems, ammunition and replacement barrels has increased sharply as NATO members rebuild inventories and expand land-force capabilities.

Bosnia and Herzegovina already maintains a relatively broad defence-industrial base for a country of its size, with domestic companies producing ammunition, explosives, primers, fuzes, artillery weapons and other military equipment.

A successful self-propelled howitzer programme would expand those capabilities into one of the most strategically important segments of the European land-systems market.

BNT would be entering a highly competitive field dominated by established platforms such as CAESAR, K9 and RCH 155\. A Bosnian system would therefore likely need to differentiate itself through cost, production flexibility, NATO-standard ammunition compatibility and potentially a simpler export proposition for customers unable or unwilling to procure significantly more expensive Western platforms.

Several important details remain unknown, including the vehicle chassis, barrel length, ammunition capacity, protection level, rate of fire, degree of automation and timetable for prototype testing.

Those specifications will ultimately determine whether the project develops into an exportable weapon system or remains primarily a domestic technology programme.

What is already clear is the direction of travel: BNT-TMiH is attempting to move beyond conventional artillery manufacturing and into the development of a complete modern 155mm mobile artillery system.
