Czech defense and industrial group Czechoslovak Group (CSG) has acquired a 9.5% stake in Canadian satellite manufacturer MDA Space, becoming the company's largest shareholder. Announced on October 13, 2026, the investment establishes CSG as a strategic investor in the space industry and could lead to cooperation on satellite manufacturing and assembly facilities in Europe. The financial value of the transaction was not disclosed.

The investment gives the Prague-based group a minority ownership position in MDA Space, a publicly traded Canadian company specializing in satellite systems, space robotics, geointelligence and space operations. MDA Space is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange under the ticker MDA and employs more than 4,000 space professionals.

CSG said the investment forms part of its long-term strategy to develop space capabilities alongside its existing defense and aerospace businesses. The shares are held through a dedicated subsidiary, with CSG positioning itself as a long-term strategic shareholder rather than announcing a takeover or operational merger.

## CSG and MDA Space Explore Satellite Manufacturing in Europe

One of the central elements of the investment is the possibility of future industrial cooperation between CSG and MDA Space. According to the [official CSG announcement](https://csg.com/en/news/csg-enters-the-space-sector-through-investment-in-mda-space?ref=adriadefense.com), potential areas include joint investment in European satellite manufacturing or assembly facilities, cooperation on strategic acquisitions and access to CSG's international customer network.

Such cooperation could establish additional European production capacity for satellite technologies while supporting MDA Space's expansion into government, military and commercial markets. However, neither company has announced a binding manufacturing agreement, selected a European facility location or committed to a specific production investment.

For CSG, the investment provides exposure to an established satellite manufacturer without requiring the group to develop its own space manufacturing infrastructure from the beginning. MDA Space already operates high-volume satellite production facilities in Canada, including an expanded manufacturing site in Montréal inaugurated in May 2026.

The Canadian company produces communications satellites and technologies for Earth observation, orbital infrastructure and space exploration. Its satellite operations serve both commercial operators and government customers, including organizations with military communications and intelligence requirements.

## MDA Space Expands Military Satellite and Defense Capabilities

MDA Space's defense portfolio is particularly relevant to CSG's existing military industry activities. The company develops satellite communications systems, Earth observation technologies and space-domain capabilities that support government and national security applications.

In September 2026, MDA Space introduced [MDA AURORA BLACK](https://mda.space/article/mda-space-unveils-mda-aurora-black-a-defence-focused-software-defined-satellite?ref=adriadefense.com), a defense-focused software-defined satellite platform designed for secure military communications. According to the manufacturer, the platform incorporates onboard anti-jamming capabilities, resistance to GPS spoofing, secure communications and additional protection against threats to space-based operations.

The investment comes as European governments increasingly pursue sovereign satellite reconnaissance and military communications capabilities. Germany, for example, has moved forward with its SPOCK 1 radar reconnaissance program.

As [AdriaDefense reported on October 7](https://www.adriadefense.com/bundeswehr-gains-direct-access-to-rheinmetall-iceye-sar-satellites/), the Bundeswehr now has direct tasking access to dedicated Rheinmetall-ICEYE synthetic aperture radar satellites, while satellite manufacturing has started in Neuss.

Although these developments illustrate the growth of Europe's defense space industry, CSG and MDA Space have not announced participation in SPOCK 1 or another specific European military satellite procurement program.

## CSG Establishes Space Division Leadership With Former NATO Adviser

Alongside the acquisition, CSG has established a dedicated management team to develop its space activities, bringing together expertise in military space operations, corporate investment and the Canadian aerospace industry.

Ladislav Stahl has been appointed Head of Space Strategy and Technology. He previously served as a space intelligence and space security adviser within NATO Headquarters' Intelligence Division and led the Czech Republic's Satellite Centre.

Filip Kocián will serve as Space Director for Corporate Development, drawing on experience in space-sector investment, acquisitions and financing. Cameron McKenzie, a former senior executive at L3Harris Technologies' WESCAM business, joins as Senior Adviser for Canada, supporting CSG's activities and relationships in the Canadian aerospace and defense market.

The investment also follows smaller space-sector investments made through the Tech Horizons venture capital fund in British satellite intelligence company SatVu and Germany's Atmos Space Cargo. Together, these investments indicate that CSG's expansion into space technologies extends beyond its newly acquired holding in MDA Space.

CSG has simultaneously continued investing in conventional defense manufacturing. In September 2026, [AdriaDefense reported on CSG's €49.7 million investment](https://www.adriadefense.com/csg-invests-eur49-7m-to-expand-czech-military-vehicle-production/) to expand military vehicle production capacity in the Czech Republic.

The 9.5% acquisition gives CSG a position in an established international satellite manufacturer and creates a basis for potential cooperation on future space projects. Whether that relationship results in European factories, joint acquisitions or new military satellite programs will depend on subsequent agreements between the two companies.
