Denmark has deployed more than 800 soldiers and hundreds of military vehicles to Latvia, completing the arrival of a Danish battlegroup that will serve on NATO’s eastern flank until January 2027\. The force has transferred to the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia, making Denmark one of the brigade’s principal maneuver contributors.

The deployment follows a Danish government decision in June to send a battalion contribution of up to 850 personnel to Latvia during the second half of 2026\. Copenhagen subsequently extended the deployment and sent an infantry company ahead of the main force to maintain a more continuous Danish presence at Camp Valdemar.

## Danish battlegroup joins Canadian-led NATO brigade

The Danish Armed Forces completed the battlegroup deployment on August 12 after moving personnel and equipment across the Baltic region. The force includes combat and supporting elements and brought hundreds of vehicles to Camp Valdemar.

Denmark had previously indicated that tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers and other equipment would be moved through Danish ports for the deployment. The Danish Home Guard supported the operation by securing temporary military areas at the ports and providing access control, surveillance and traffic management.

A formal transfer of authority at Camp Valdemar placed the Danish force under NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia. The brigade is led by Canada and includes forces from Denmark and 12 other NATO countries.

Lieutenant Colonel Karina Wøbbe commands the Danish battlegroup. According to the Danish Armed Forces, the unit will train with its allied counterparts and contribute to NATO deterrence and collective defense in Latvia over the coming months.

The Danish deployment also allowed an infantry company from the Guard Hussar Regiment, which had deployed earlier in the summer, to return to Denmark. That company arrived in Latvia on July 7 as an interim contribution ahead of the battlegroup.

## Baltic Express protected the Danish deployment across the Baltic

The movement of the battlegroup also became a multinational military operation in its own right.

Danish vehicles and other equipment traveled to Latvia aboard a transport ship escorted by the Royal Danish Navy frigate Esbern Snare and Swedish Navy corvette Nyköping. A British P-8 maritime patrol aircraft also supported the movement under Baltic Express, an operation coordinated through the British-led Joint Expeditionary Force.

The main personnel element traveled aboard an Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport operated by the Multinational Multirole Tanker Transport Unit. Danish, Swedish and Turkish combat aircraft escorted the flight, including a Royal Danish Air Force F-35 and Swedish Gripen fighters.

The escort demonstrated how Denmark’s reinforcement of Latvia extends beyond a land force rotation. Moving a battalion-sized formation into the Baltic theater requires protected maritime and air routes, logistics coordination and cooperation between NATO members and Joint Expeditionary Force participants.

## Denmark now operates at brigade and division levels in Latvia

Denmark’s role in Latvia extends above the deployed battlegroup. The Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia sits under NATO Multinational Division North, whose headquarters operates from Ādaži in Latvia and Slagelse in Denmark.

Denmark leads Multinational Division North and provides its commander. The headquarters supports defense planning in the Baltic states and coordinates military activities and exercises across the region.

That command arrangement gives Copenhagen two distinct roles in NATO’s Baltic posture: Denmark contributes a maneuver formation to the brigade in Latvia while also holding a senior command responsibility at divisional level.

The latest rotation is also not Denmark’s first battalion deployment following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to Janes, the 2026 deployment represents the fifth Danish combat battalion sent to Latvia since 2022\.

## NATO continues shifting from presence to forward defense

The Danish rotation forms part of the broader expansion of NATO forces in Latvia.

For Denmark, extending the deployment until January 2027 reduces gaps between rotations and responds directly to Latvia’s request for a more continuous allied presence. Copenhagen had initially planned the battalion contribution for the second half of 2026 before adding the interim infantry company and extending the battalion’s deployment.

The deployment therefore carries significance beyond the addition of more than 800 troops. Denmark is combining a recurring battalion-level combat presence, multinational reinforcement procedures and divisional command responsibilities in the same Baltic theater.

That structure gives NATO a Danish force already integrated into the Canadian-led brigade rather than relying solely on units that would have to deploy and establish multinational command relationships after a crisis begins.
