# Fiducial Software Used to Intercept Russian Shahed in Ukraine

Dutch defense technology startup Fiducial says its autonomous software has been used by a Ukrainian drone pilot to intercept a Russian Shahed attack drone under live battlefield conditions. The Delft-based company disclosed the operational use on September 1 alongside an interview with the Ukrainian pilot involved in the interception. 

The disclosure adds battlefield evidence to Fiducial's push into autonomous counter-unmanned aircraft systems, or counter-UAS. The company had previously reported confirmed Shahed interceptions involving its software and said its technology is integrated with hardware partners working with government stakeholders in Ukraine and elsewhere in Europe. 

Fiducial develops computer vision and autonomy software rather than complete interceptor aircraft. Its technology portfolio covers visual counter-UAS detection, navigation in environments where Global Navigation Satellite System signals are unavailable or disrupted, and autonomous interception. 

The company bases its approach on 3D computer vision, spatial geometry and classical computer vision, while using machine learning where it provides a measurable improvement. Fiducial says its software runs at the edge and is designed for integration with third-party hardware platforms. 

That hardware-independent approach could allow the same autonomy layer to support different interceptor designs without requiring Fiducial to manufacture the airframe itself. The company has not publicly identified the interceptor platform used in the latest Shahed engagement, and its September 1 disclosure does not provide the location or date of the interception. 

Fiducial is headquartered in Delft, the Netherlands, and currently lists 38 employees on LinkedIn. The company said earlier in 2026 that its team had expanded from fewer than 10 people to more than 30 as it shifted its focus toward defense applications. 

The startup is led by co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Andreas Verbruggen. Fiducial's work in Ukraine has centered on reducing the burden placed on operators as interceptor drones increasingly become part of the country's layered response to Russian long-range attack drones. 

Ukraine is pursuing autonomous interception more broadly as Russia expands the scale and sophistication of its drone attacks. In June 2026, Ukraine's Brave1 defense technology cluster disclosed a separate Ukrainian-developed system that automates 95% of the interception process, from launch through engagement of a Shahed-type target. 

Ukraine's Ministry of Defence has also highlighted interceptor platforms equipped with automatic terminal guidance and navigation that does not depend on GPS. The Ukrainian LITAVR interceptor, for example, combines non-GPS navigation with an automatic terminal guidance function that identifies a target and guides the aircraft toward impact. 

For Fiducial, the significance of the latest disclosure is therefore less about introducing another interceptor aircraft and more about demonstrating a software layer under combat conditions. If autonomy software can be integrated across multiple hardware platforms, European counter-UAS developers could separate the development cycles of airframes, sensors and autonomous guidance systems.

The September 1 disclosure does not establish interception rates, the level of autonomy used throughout the engagement or performance against electronic warfare. Those metrics will be important in assessing how Fiducial's technology compares with the growing number of autonomous interceptor systems emerging from Ukraine and Europe.
