Germany's Bundeswehr has signed a new contract for drone interception systems as the country moves ahead with four military procurement projects covering counter-drone defense, Patriot air defense and secure helicopter communications. The agreement was signed on October 15, 2026, one day after the German Bundestag's Budget Committee approved the procurement measures.

According to German defense publication *hartpunkt*, the counter-drone contract with ARGUS Interception GmbH is a seven-year framework agreement potentially worth more than €1.1 billion. Germany's military procurement agency has confirmed the signing but has not officially disclosed the contract's financial value.

## Germany Signs Counter-Drone Contract With ARGUS Interception

Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) confirmed that it signed a contract on October 15 for net-based drone interception systems intended to protect military installations in Germany and abroad.

The first systems are scheduled for delivery in 2027.

According to *hartpunkt*, the framework agreement with ARGUS Interception could cover approximately 450 complete counter-drone systems over seven years. An initial order valued at approximately €165 million reportedly covers a mid-double-digit number of systems for delivery in 2027.

These figures are based on defense industry reporting rather than an official financial disclosure. The potential framework value should not be interpreted as a confirmed expenditure for all 450 systems.

Based in Rotenburg, Lower Saxony, ARGUS Interception develops the A1-Falke interceptor drone, which captures unauthorized aircraft using nets rather than destroying them with explosives or projectiles.

The technology combines ground-based detection equipment, onboard sensors and automated tracking. Once an operator authorizes an interception, the drone can pursue the target, capture it in a net and transport it to a designated recovery location.

This approach reduces the risk of falling debris in densely populated areas and preserves the intercepted aircraft for forensic examination. The systems are intended to complement radar, electronic warfare and other counter-drone defenses, rather than replace conventional air defense weapons.

ARGUS Interception has previously supplied A1-Falke interceptors to the Bundeswehr and announced deliveries to Germany's Federal Police in February 2026.

## Bundestag Approves Replacement Patriot Fire Units

The German Bundestag's Budget Committee also approved the replacement of Patriot air defense equipment previously transferred to Ukraine.

The German Ministry of Defense confirmed that the replacements will be procured through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program.

According to *hartpunkt*, the acquisition covers two Patriot fire units at an estimated total cost of approximately €650 million. The publication reported that Norway is expected to contribute more than €300 million toward the procurement.

The reported delivery schedule extends through 2028, with initial components potentially arriving before the end of 2026\. These financial and delivery details have not been independently confirmed in the ministry's public announcement.

Germany has transferred Patriot equipment to Ukraine to strengthen its defenses against Russian missiles and aircraft. Replacing the donated units is intended to restore capacity within the Bundeswehr while maintaining support for Ukrainian air defense.

## Patriot Maintenance and NH90 Communications

The remaining two procurement approvals address equipment availability and secure military communications.

One project covers mobile maintenance containers for Patriot air defense units. The containers allow repair and servicing activities to take place closer to operational positions, reducing dependence on fixed maintenance facilities.

According to *hartpunkt*, Germany plans to purchase 40 maintenance containers, with an option for another 14, at an estimated total program value of approximately €90 million. The main deliveries are expected in 2030.

The fourth project concerns additional encrypted aviation radios for the NH90 helicopter fleet. The equipment will be ordered under an existing contract and is intended to support secure tactical communication between helicopters, ground units and other aircraft.

The German Ministry of Defense did not disclose the quantities or individual financial values associated with every procurement measure.

## Germany Expands Protection Against Small Drones

The latest decisions address two different levels of air defense.

Patriot systems provide protection against higher-end aerial threats, including certain ballistic missiles and aircraft. Net-based drone interceptors are designed for smaller unmanned aircraft operating near military facilities, logistics sites and other protected locations.

Germany's Ministry of Defense has identified unauthorized drone activity, reconnaissance and potential sabotage as growing security concerns. The Bundeswehr has established mobile counter-drone response elements across its armed services, including teams that have already supported Belgium and Denmark.

The October procurement decisions expand that approach by combining fixed-site drone protection with the replacement and maintenance of conventional air defense equipment.

The immediate milestones are the first deliveries of the ARGUS counter-drone systems in 2027 and the procurement of replacement Patriot fire units. Their eventual operational coverage will depend on delivered quantities, integration with existing sensors and military deployment decisions.

## Key Questions

**Which counter-drone company received the Bundeswehr contract?**

German company ARGUS Interception signed an agreement to supply net-based drone interception systems. Industry reporting estimates the potential seven-year framework value at more than €1.1 billion.

**How many counter-drone systems could Germany receive?**

Approximately 450 complete systems could be covered by the framework, according to *hartpunkt*. This is a reported potential procurement volume, not confirmation that all units have been ordered.

**How many Patriot systems is Germany replacing?**

German defense reporting identifies two Patriot fire units to replace equipment transferred to Ukraine. The acquisition will proceed through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales program.

**When will the new German counter-drone systems arrive?**
