Germany will establish its first dedicated Bundeswehr drone regiment in 2027, with up to 600 military personnel and unmanned systems covering operational ranges of up to 500 kilometers. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the plan on October 1 during a visit to the Bergen military training area in Lower Saxony.

The new regiment will form part of the German Army's 10th Panzer Division and bring together aerial and ground-based unmanned systems, loitering munitions and electronic warfare capabilities. The initiative reflects Germany's effort to integrate lessons from the war in Ukraine into its land forces.

## New Bundeswehr regiment will integrate drones and electronic warfare

The planned regiment will combine several capabilities that have become increasingly important in modern land warfare. Alongside aerial reconnaissance and strike systems, the formation will operate unmanned ground platforms and have its own electronic warfare company.

Pistorius said the regiment will cover operational ranges extending from the immediate battlefield to approximately 500 kilometers. The range figure describes the planned formation's overall operational reach, not the capability of every unmanned system it will operate.

The regiment is intended to consolidate expertise and accelerate the integration of unmanned systems into Germany's military operations.

The announcement follows earlier statements by German Army Inspector Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, who emphasized the importance of combining armored formations with unmanned systems during the Freedom Shield 2026 exercise in Lithuania.

Pistorius has also stressed that drones will complement rather than replace conventional military equipment, including armored vehicles, aircraft and naval platforms.

## Germany has already signed contracts with three drone manufacturers

The decision to establish a dedicated regiment comes as Germany expands its procurement of loitering munitions and other unmanned military systems.

According to the Bundeswehr, contracts for loitering munitions were signed with German defense technology companies Helsing and STARK on February 26, 2026\. A third agreement followed with Rheinmetall on April 22.

The procurement covers different weapon systems, including Helsing's HX-2, STARK's Virtus and Rheinmetall's FV-014\. The Bundeswehr is using framework agreements and contractual provisions that allow technological improvements to be incorporated as the systems develop.

Germany has also identified its 45th Panzer Brigade in Lithuania as the first formation scheduled to receive a comprehensive loitering munition capability from 2027\. The brigade belongs to the same division under which the new drone regiment will be established.

These procurement programs demonstrate Germany's broader investment in unmanned warfare. However, the Bundeswehr has not publicly confirmed which specific systems or quantities will be allocated to the new regiment.

German-Ukrainian industrial cooperation is also expanding in parallel. As [previously reported by AdriaDefense](https://www.adriadefense.com/germany-expands-defense-industry-cooperation-with-ukraine/), Berlin and Kyiv are pursuing joint drone production and other defense technology projects.

## Formation planned for 2027

The new regiment represents an organizational change in how the German Army intends to employ unmanned systems, combining reconnaissance, strike capabilities, ground robotics and electronic warfare within a dedicated formation.

Its establishment during 2027 will take place alongside the introduction of additional loitering munitions and the continued development of Germany's unmanned systems capabilities.

The Bundeswehr has not yet disclosed the regiment's final equipment inventory, procurement budget or detailed implementation schedule. Those decisions will determine how the new formation develops beyond its initial establishment.

## Key questions

**When will Germany establish its first drone regiment?**

Germany plans to establish its first dedicated Bundeswehr drone regiment during 2027, with up to 600 military personnel.

**What capabilities will the regiment have?**

The formation will combine aerial and ground-based unmanned systems, loitering munitions and its own electronic warfare company, with a planned operational reach of up to 500 kilometers.

**Which companies will supply the regiment?**

No supplier allocation specific to the new regiment has been confirmed. The Bundeswehr has separately signed loitering munition contracts with Helsing, STARK and Rheinmetall.
