# Germany’s TKMS and EDGE Explore Joint Underwater Surveillance Capabilities

TKMS and EDGE Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to evaluate cooperation on integrated underwater surveillance and protection systems, as Germany and the United Arab Emirates move to deepen defense and security ties.

The agreement was signed in Munich during a UAE state visit to Germany and forms part of a broader initiative agreed between the German federal government and the UAE to strengthen bilateral cooperation in defense and security. 

Under the MoU, the two companies will examine an integrated, multi-system approach to underwater security, combining different platforms and sensor systems to create a more comprehensive picture of activity below the surface.

TKMS said its platform capabilities could be combined with EDGE’s systems expertise to develop surveillance and protection solutions addressing increasingly complex maritime threats. No specific platform, procurement program or contract value has been announced. 

The agreement was signed by **Miguel Ángel López Borrego**, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TKMS, and **Omar Al Zaabi**, President – Commercial at EDGE.

TKMS CEO **Oliver Burkhard** said the company views its existing relationship with the UAE as a foundation for deeper cooperation, particularly as demand for maritime surveillance and protection capabilities increases.

EDGE Managing Director and CEO **Hamad Al Marar** said maritime security is directly linked to the UAE’s national and economic resilience, with the company seeking to expand sovereign capabilities through international technology partnerships. 

### Growing Focus on the Underwater Domain

The agreement comes as TKMS continues to expand its activities across the underwater warfare and maritime security sector.

Earlier in September, TKMS and Italy’s Fincantieri signed a separate MoU aimed at expanding their long-standing cooperation in submarines and other underwater technologies. The companies intend to establish a broader collaboration framework focused on industrial cooperation and future underwater projects.

TKMS ATLAS UK also secured a British Ministry of Defence contract in September to develop and deliver a next-generation torpedo defense system for current and future Royal Navy submarine platforms. 

The latest agreement with EDGE extends that activity toward the Gulf, where protection of ports, maritime infrastructure, shipping routes and other critical assets has become an increasingly important security requirement.

For now, the TKMS-EDGE agreement remains an exploratory framework. The companies have not disclosed a development timeline or identified which specific TKMS platforms or EDGE sensor systems could eventually form part of a joint solution.
