Vodosek is set to succeed General Rudolf Striedinger at the end of September, when Striedinger retires after serving as chief of the General Staff since 2022. The appointment still requires the formal involvement of Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen. According to the Austrian Armed Forces, Tanner selected Vodosek after considering six candidates for the military's top position. Vodosek said his priorities will include continuing the Aufbauplan Österreichisches Bundesheer 2032+, Austria's long-term program to rebuild military capabilities. He linked that effort to the security situation in Europe and the requirement to strengthen Austria's military national defense. ## Austria puts its armaments chief in command of the Bundesheer Vodosek's appointment is notable because he comes to the General Staff directly from the part of Austria's defense establishment responsible for procurement. He took charge of Directorate 5 Procurement in 2021 and became its director and Austria's National Armaments Director in 2025\. Before that, his career included positions in logistics, armaments planning, human resources and Austria's military representation in Brussels. Vodosek also commanded Jagdkommando, the Austrian Armed Forces' special operations unit. His move to the top military position therefore creates direct continuity between the procurement decisions made during Austria's current rearmament cycle and the General Staff responsible for turning new equipment into operational capability. That distinction is increasingly important. Austria is moving from selecting and ordering equipment toward introducing new and modernized systems across its land and air forces. The challenge for the General Staff will increasingly involve personnel, training, infrastructure, logistics and force structure alongside procurement. ## Aufbauplan 2032+ shifts from procurement to fielding The Austrian government has substantially increased defense funding to support the modernization effort. Austria allocated EUR 4.391 billion to the Bundesheer for 2025, followed by EUR 4.761 billion for 2026\. The latter represents an increase of around 8.4 percent compared with 2025, according to the Austrian Armed Forces. The Aufbauplan 2032+ covers mobility, protection and firepower, air surveillance, ground-based air defense, armored forces, command and control, cyber capabilities, logistics and infrastructure. One of the latest visible steps came on August 25, when the Bundesheer handed the first modernized Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks and Ulan infantry fighting vehicles to operational units at Großmittel. The armored vehicle program illustrates the task awaiting the incoming General Staff chief. Procurement and modernization represent only one stage of capability development. The Bundesheer must also integrate upgraded platforms into units, sustain them and align their use with training and readiness requirements. Austria is simultaneously renewing capabilities in other areas, increasing the organizational demands on the force as equipment enters service. ## Vodosek brings procurement and operational experience Vodosek joined the Austrian Armed Forces in 1982 and later graduated from the Theresian Military Academy. He completed Austria's 14th General Staff Course and served as logistics chief of the 9th Panzergrenadier Brigade before moving into armaments planning at the Defense Ministry. He subsequently served at Austria's military representation in Brussels and held several positions within the ministry. From 2013, Vodosek headed the military's provision support group and worked in human resources management before moving into his procurement leadership role in 2021. His background means Austria's next chief of the General Staff has experience on both sides of the modernization process: identifying and procuring capabilities and preparing the military organization that must employ them. The timing makes that combination particularly relevant. Austria's Zielbild Österreichisches Bundesheer 2032 calls for stronger battalions and brigades, additional equipment and new capabilities intended to make the force capable of military national defense by 2032. Rather than inheriting a modernization plan that is still primarily conceptual, Vodosek will take command while multiple elements of that plan are already moving through procurement, modernization and fielding. --- ## What will Harald Vodosek prioritize as Austria's military chief?
