European defense group KNDS and France's SeaOwl Technology Solutions have signed a cooperation agreement to develop and test an armed unmanned surface vehicle designed for offensive and defensive naval operations.

Announced at Euronaval 2026 in Paris on November 3, the project combines SeaOwl's autonomous maritime platform technology with KNDS expertise in precision munitions and warhead qualification.

The companies aim to develop a naval drone capable of operating in contested maritime environments while allowing a remote human operator to retain authority over weapons engagement.

## Naval Drone Designed for Autonomous Operations

According to KNDS, the proposed unmanned surface vehicle will have a maximum speed of 35 knots, a combat range of up to 200 kilometers and a payload capacity of 30 kilograms.

The platform is designed to reduce its radar and optical signatures, improving its ability to operate discreetly in high-threat environments.

Its architecture will combine autonomous navigation, secure communications and a protected weapons-control system. Although the vessel will be capable of autonomous movement, the companies specify that decisions to engage targets and fire weapons will remain under human control.

The cooperation also includes the integration of a KNDS-qualified warhead, extending the company's established munitions capabilities into autonomous maritime systems.

## European Naval Industry Expands Unmanned Capabilities

The agreement reflects growing industrial interest in relatively small, remotely operated naval platforms capable of performing missions traditionally assigned to crewed vessels or larger combat systems.

For KNDS, the partnership creates an opportunity to integrate established weapons technologies with maritime robotics. SeaOwl, meanwhile, gains access to munitions expertise needed to develop armed versions of its unmanned vessels.

The companies have not disclosed a production contract, procurement customer, development budget or delivery timetable. The announcement concerns a development and testing partnership rather than an operational system entering military service.

The project also forms part of a broader European move toward naval autonomy. In the Baltic region, [Latvia's SUBmerge Baltic is expanding underwater drone production](https://www.adriadefense.com/latvias-submerge-baltic-scales-underwater-drone-production/), targeting naval security, critical infrastructure inspection and other maritime missions.

The next significant milestone for KNDS and SeaOwl will be demonstrating the integration of autonomous navigation and the weapons system under operationally relevant conditions.
