The tanks arrived in Poland on August 24 and will equip Polish Army units in the eastern part of the country. The delivery is the first under a **$6.5 billion contract for 180 K2 tanks** signed by the Polish Armaments Agency and Hyundai Rotem on August 1, 2025\. Unlike Poland’s first K2 purchase, the second agreement combines rapid deliveries from South Korea with technology transfer, support vehicles and plans to assemble most K2PL tanks in Poland. ## Poland starts deliveries under its second K2 contract The 28 tanks arrived with ammunition and maintenance equipment before being transported to Polish Army units in eastern Poland, according to the Polish Armaments Agency as reported by Janes. The second executive contract covers **180 tanks between 2026 and 2030**. Of those, **116 will be delivered in the existing K2GF configuration during 2026 and 2027**, while another **64 will be delivered in the K2PL configuration between 2028 and 2030**. The agreement follows the completion of Poland’s first K2 executive contract. Warsaw signed that agreement in August 2022 for **180 K2 tanks at a net value of $3.37 billion**, with deliveries running from 2022 through 2025. Poland received the final 20 tanks from that initial order on November 13, 2025, completing delivery of all 180 vehicles. The arrival of the new batch therefore marks the beginning of Poland’s second K2 procurement phase rather than a continuation of the original order. With the latest 28 vehicles, Poland has now received **208 K2 tanks** across the two executive contracts. ## K2PL production shifts part of the program to Poland The central industrial element of the second contract is the **K2PL**, a configuration adapted for Polish requirements. The first three K2PL tanks are scheduled to be manufactured in South Korea and used to test changes introduced compared with the existing K2GF configuration. The remaining **61 K2PL tanks will be assembled at Zakłady Mechaniczne Bumar-Łabędy in Gliwice, Poland**. Deliveries of the 64 K2PL tanks are scheduled for **2028 to 2030**. The arrangement gives Poland a substantially larger industrial role than under the first K2 contract. Poland’s Ministry of National Defence has identified technology transfer, domestic service capabilities and localization of spare-parts supply chains as core elements of the program. The localization effort also fits a broader shift in Polish procurement policy. Warsaw is attempting to combine rapid acquisition of foreign weapons with greater participation by Polish defense companies, particularly in programs large enough to sustain domestic production, maintenance and modernization capacity. For the K2 program, Bumar-Łabędy becomes a central part of that strategy. ## Second K2 deal adds 81 support vehicles The second contract extends beyond the tanks themselves. Poland is also acquiring **81 support vehicles based on the K2 platform**, including **31 armored recovery vehicles, 25 armored engineering vehicles and 25 armored vehicle-launched bridges**. Deliveries of those vehicles are planned for 2029 through 2031. This marks an important difference from the first executive contract. Polish defense officials had identified the absence of accompanying support vehicles from the original K2 purchase as a capability that needed to be addressed in the second agreement. The new contract also contains logistics and training packages as well as ammunition. Polish personnel will receive training covering crews, instructors and technical staff. The logistics package includes spare parts, diagnostic and maintenance equipment, specialized tools and technical documentation. ## Poland is building one of NATO’s largest tank fleets Poland began its K2 program following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Warsaw’s subsequent transfer of substantial quantities of Soviet-designed armor to Kyiv. The K2 became one of several tank platforms selected to rebuild and expand Polish armored forces. Poland is simultaneously introducing US-made M1 Abrams tanks while retaining and modernizing elements of its Leopard 2 fleet. The Korean program, however, stands apart because of its planned industrial localization. Poland and South Korea originally signed a framework agreement in July 2022 covering plans for **1,000 K2 and K2PL tanks**. The executive agreements translate portions of that larger framework into funded orders with defined delivery schedules. The two executive contracts signed so far cover **360 K2-family tanks**. The second contract also creates the first concrete production pathway for K2PL in Poland. If the localization phase proceeds according to schedule, the program will move from direct acquisition of South Korean tanks toward a model in which Polish industry participates in assembly, servicing and the supply chain. That transition will be important beyond the 64 K2PL tanks currently under contract. Poland’s original framework envisages a much larger K2-family fleet, meaning the performance of the Bumar-Łabędy production and technology-transfer phase could influence future procurement decisions.
