# Poland Recovers Suspected New Russian Gerbera Drone From Baltic Sea

Polish forces have recovered what officials believe may be a new variant of Russia’s Gerbera military drone from the Baltic Sea, giving investigators a rare opportunity to examine the latest evolution of a rapidly changing Russian unmanned platform.

Poland’s military recovered the unmanned aircraft near Rusinowo, close to Jarosławiec on the country’s northwestern Baltic coast, on September 14.

Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz initially said preliminary inspections indicated that the aircraft was a Russian military drone.

Hours later, after Polish specialists began examining the wreckage, he said increasing evidence suggested that Russia had probably lost a previously unseen version of the Gerbera drone.

The Polish defence minister urged caution while the investigation continues and said the aircraft would undergo detailed technical analysis.

Polish authorities have not reported evidence that the drone was deliberately sent toward Polish territory.

Kosiniak-Kamysz later said the current assessment was that Russia had probably lost the aircraft during maneuvers over the Baltic Sea rather than intentionally targeting Poland.

Military Police, explosives specialists, chemical teams and forensic investigators are involved in examining the recovered aircraft.

Polish military officials also said national monitoring systems had not registered a violation of Polish airspace associated with the incident.

## Gerbera is evolving beyond its original decoy role

Russia initially introduced the Gerbera as a low-cost unmanned aircraft designed largely to accompany Geran-series attack drones and complicate Ukrainian air-defense operations.

Its inexpensive construction and relatively low-value components allow Russia to launch large numbers of the aircraft alongside more capable strike systems, forcing defenders to identify and potentially expend interceptors against decoys.

The U.S. Army’s ODIN equipment database describes the Gerbera as a low-cost decoy one-way attack drone primarily intended to saturate Ukrainian air defenses and improve the survivability of other strike systems.

However, the platform has evolved considerably.

Gerbera variants have been reported performing reconnaissance, communications relay and limited strike missions, while newer configurations have incorporated improved navigation systems and greater resistance to electronic warfare.

Some variants have also been observed carrying additional fuel capacity and acting as communications nodes for other unmanned aircraft.

The Gerbera’s modular architecture has therefore turned what began as a relatively simple decoy into a family of inexpensive multi-role unmanned systems.

## Why the recovered aircraft matters

If Polish investigators confirm that the aircraft recovered near Jarosławiec represents a new Gerbera configuration, the wreckage could provide NATO specialists with valuable intelligence on Russia’s latest drone architecture.

Physical access to an intact or partially intact platform can reveal far more than imagery alone, including navigation systems, communications equipment, electronic components, manufacturing methods and possible changes intended to improve resistance to electronic warfare.

The location of the recovery is also significant.

Jarosławiec lies on Poland’s Baltic coast, far from the Ukrainian border and close to an increasingly contested maritime environment where NATO and Russian forces routinely conduct surveillance, exercises and intelligence operations.

The incident therefore adds another data point to growing concern among NATO members over unmanned aircraft activity around the alliance’s eastern and northern flanks.

Russia’s Gerbera program illustrates a broader trend in modern drone warfare: inexpensive platforms are being continuously modified rather than replaced, allowing manufacturers and military units to introduce new capabilities at a pace that traditional procurement systems often struggle to match.

For Poland, the recovered aircraft could offer a direct look at the latest stage of that evolution.
