The company plans three independent production lines with capacity for up to 60,000 rounds each, with full-scale production scheduled to begin in October 2026. The company presented its expanding manufacturing and testing infrastructure during Range Day Niewiadów 2026 on September 4\. The project adds another source of NATO-standard 155mm ammunition as Poland increases domestic defense production while rapidly expanding its artillery fleet. ## Three production lines will provide 180,000-round capacity Niewiadów is constructing the large-caliber ammunition plant at its industrial complex in central Poland. The company has secured the land and infrastructure required for the project, completed most design work and signed the necessary agreements and contracts. Production equipment for the new facility has already been ordered. The factory will operate three independent production lines. Each is designed for annual capacity of up to 60,000 155mm rounds, giving the plant a combined target capacity of 180,000 rounds per year. Niewiadów has secured PLN 250 million in financing for the investment. The project includes automated production infrastructure as well as the company’s existing research, quality-control and ballistic-testing capabilities. The company previously targeted an initial production level of 120,000 rounds during 2026 before moving toward the full 180,000-round annual capacity. The facility will also have the capability to fill and complete large-caliber ammunition. Niewiadów has said its ammunition activities cover calibers from 82mm through 155mm. ## Poland wants greater control over its 155mm ammunition supply The project is particularly relevant to Poland because Warsaw has built one of Europe’s largest modern 155mm artillery fleets. The Polish Armed Forces operate domestically produced AHS Krab tracked self-propelled howitzers and South Korean K9A1 Thunder systems. Poland has also ordered the K9PL configuration as part of its longer-term artillery modernization. Niewiadów is developing its 155mm ammunition effort with Poland’s Military Institute of Armament Technology, known by its Polish abbreviation WITU. The cooperation is intended to commercialize ammunition technology developed in Poland and reduce future dependence on foreign licenses. The company has also developed international industrial partnerships. In February, Northrop Grumman and Niewiadów announced a framework agreement covering cooperation on 155mm artillery ammunition production in Poland. Northrop Grumman indicated at the time that the partnership aimed for annual production exceeding 180,000 artillery rounds. Production of qualification rounds was expected to begin during 2026. Niewiadów has previously identified Poland’s armed forces as the priority customer while also positioning the facility to serve other NATO markets. ## Niewiadów adds private capacity to Poland’s ammunition buildup The investment comes as Warsaw increasingly directs defense spending toward domestic and Central European manufacturers. Polish defense procurement from domestic and Central European companies has risen almost fourfold since 2022 to PLN 30.4 billion, according to data from Poland’s Armament Agency reported by Reuters. Poland plans approximately €53 billion in core defense spending in 2026, equivalent to around 4.7% of gross domestic product. That spending is creating demand not only for additional weapons but also for the industrial capacity required to sustain them. For artillery, ammunition supply has become particularly important because Poland is simultaneously expanding the number of 155mm systems in service. Domestic ammunition production can reduce exposure to foreign supply constraints while giving Warsaw greater control over stockpile replenishment. Niewiadów differs from much of Poland’s traditional ammunition sector because it represents privately controlled industrial capacity rather than another facility within the state-owned Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa structure. Its planned output should therefore be viewed as an additional component of Poland’s broader ammunition manufacturing base rather than the country’s total 155mm capacity. The Niewiadów site covers more than 100 hectares and includes ammunition manufacturing, storage and testing infrastructure. Its private proving ground includes 130-meter and 500-meter firing lanes capable of supporting weapons up to 155mm caliber. Expansion work will also increase explosive storage capacity to more than 500 tonnes of net explosive quantity. The September Range Day provided a public look at the project shortly before its planned transition into production.
