**U.S.-based Teledyne FLIR Defense has secured a $48 million contract from the U.S. Army to provide advanced chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) reconnaissance systems for Bulgaria's new fleet of Stryker armored vehicles.**

The contract, announced on October 26, was awarded through the U.S. Army Contracting Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) framework. Bulgaria will equip 10 of its Stryker vehicles with Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Reconnaissance Vehicle (NBCRV) Sensor Suite Upgrade systems, strengthening its ability to identify battlefield hazards without exposing personnel to contaminated areas.

The acquisition forms part of Bulgaria's wider modernization program involving 183 U.S.-made Stryker vehicles, intended to replace Soviet-era equipment and improve interoperability with NATO forces.

## Drone-Enabled CBRN Detection

The new reconnaissance package combines advanced detection sensors, unmanned aircraft and integrated command-and-control technology. Its principal capability is the detection and identification of CBRN threats from a distance, allowing commanders to assess hazardous environments before deploying personnel.

The system includes the **Teledyne FLIR R80D SkyRaider unmanned aircraft**, equipped with the MUVE B330 biological detection payload. The drone extends the reconnaissance vehicle's operational reach by enabling airborne biological threat detection in areas that may be unsafe for soldiers to enter.

A Teledyne FLIR-developed command-and-control system integrates information from the various sensors and platforms using automated data processing and sensor fusion. The company says this approach is intended to improve situational awareness and accelerate battlefield decision-making.

Teledyne FLIR began delivering the upgraded NBCRV sensor suites to U.S. Army units in 2025 following development and testing. The Bulgarian contract extends the technology's deployment to another NATO member.

## Second Major Teledyne FLIR Contract for Bulgaria in 2026

The latest agreement follows a separate contract announced in January, worth up to $32 million, for advanced electro-optical surveillance equipment for Bulgarian Strykers.

As [previously reported by AdriaDefense](https://www.adriadefense.com/teledyne-flir-defense-secures-up-to-32-million-contract-for-stryker-reconnaissance-systems-for-bulgaria/), that package includes thermal imaging systems and long-range radars designed to improve all-weather reconnaissance, surveillance and threat detection.

Together, the two contracts have announced values totaling up to $80 million, covering complementary reconnaissance and CBRN detection capabilities.

## Production in the United States, Integration in Bulgaria

Work under the new $48 million contract is expected to continue through 2028 at multiple Teledyne FLIR facilities in the United States. The company plans to integrate the sensor suites locally after the Stryker vehicles arrive in Bulgaria.

The program also connects with Bulgaria's developing domestic armored vehicle support infrastructure. The state-owned TEREM Ivaylo facility in Veliko Tarnovo is involved in final assembly and preparations for future maintenance operations.

In June, [AdriaDefense reported on progress at the TEREM facility](https://www.adriadefense.com/bulgarian-defense-minister-reviews-stryker-assembly-progress-at-terem-facility/), including plans to develop the site into a regional maintenance center for the Stryker fleet.

The new contract adds specialized CBRN reconnaissance capabilities to Bulgaria's land forces modernization while reinforcing the role of U.S. defense technology suppliers in Southeast Europe's expanding military equipment market.
