**British counterterrorism police have arrested two Latvian nationals inside RAF Molesworth, a military installation in Cambridgeshire that houses NATO and US intelligence operations, following a breach of the base's security perimeter.**

The two men, aged 36 and 32, were detained at approximately 2 a.m. on October 8 after security personnel discovered an opening in the perimeter fence. Both are Latvian citizens currently residing in the United Kingdom.

According to the [Metropolitan Police](https://news.met.police.uk/news/two-men-arrested-for-trespass-offences-at-cambridgeshire-raf-base-513763?site=uk&ref=adriadefense.com), Ministry of Defence Police patrols first identified an abandoned vehicle near the installation at around 10 p.m. on October 7.

A subsequent search involving Cambridgeshire Constabulary led officers to the damaged perimeter fence and the two suspects.

The men were initially arrested on suspicion of trespassing on a prohibited site and criminal damage. They were subsequently arrested under Section 4 of the National Security Act 2023, which concerns entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to UK interests.

Both remained in police custody as the investigation continued.

## RAF Molesworth Houses Key NATO and US Intelligence Operations

RAF Molesworth is a non-flying military installation used by American and NATO intelligence organizations.

The base hosts the NATO Intelligence Fusion Centre (NIFC), which provides intelligence assessments to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Allied Command Operations.

The centre combines intelligence from multiple sources to support NATO operational planning, deterrence and defense activities. RAF Molesworth also accommodates US military intelligence operations supporting American commands responsible for Europe and Africa.

Authorities have not disclosed how far the suspects entered the installation or whether they approached intelligence facilities.

## Police Investigating Possible Motives

Counter Terrorism Policing London has taken responsibility for the investigation.

Officers are searching two addresses in the Peterborough area in connection with the arrests.

Specialist explosive ordnance disposal personnel also examined the abandoned vehicle after concerns arose during police searches. Nothing of concern was found, and precautionary road closures were subsequently lifted.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said investigators were examining why the men had entered the base but were keeping an open mind.

Police also stated that there was currently no evidence linking the incident to the separate security investigation at RAF Fairford, another British military installation used by US forces.

The RAF Molesworth investigation remains at an early stage. Authorities have not identified a foreign intelligence connection, confirmed espionage activity or announced criminal charges against the two suspects.
