Ukrainian military officials reported disruptions to drone operations on Wednesday after SpaceX introduced new speed restrictions affecting its Starlink satellite communications service, according to presidential adviser Serhiy Beskrestnov.

The restrictions, introduced overnight on October 13–14, reportedly affect Starshield, the military-grade satellite communications service used by Ukrainian forces. Beskrestnov said connectivity was restricted when terminals moved faster than 100 miles per hour (approximately 160 km/h).

Ukraine's armed forces received no advance warning of the changes, resulting in several disrupted combat missions, the adviser said.

The Ukrainian military's 7th Rapid Reaction Corps, operating on the southeastern front, confirmed the disruptions to Reuters. According to the unit, satellite connections were interrupted for approximately 10–20 seconds even when drones were travelling at speeds of 110–120 km/h, complicating flight control and forcing some missions to be cancelled.

Ukrainian media outlet *Ukrainska Pravda* separately reported that several frontline military sources had confirmed the restrictions. Standard Starlink terminals reportedly remained operational, while the changes primarily affected the higher-speed Starshield service.

Starlink has become an important component of Ukraine's military communications infrastructure since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022\. Ukrainian forces use satellite connectivity for battlefield coordination, drone operations and logistical support, particularly where conventional communications are vulnerable to electronic warfare.

The reported restrictions particularly affect unmanned aircraft that depend on satellite connectivity while operating at higher speeds. Slowing these aircraft to maintain communications can also increase their exposure to enemy air defenses.

SpaceX had not publicly explained the reported restrictions as of Wednesday's initial reports and did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. The reason for the changes remains unconfirmed.
