German defense technology company VANEA Defence has unveiled ATOMZA, a non-kinetic counter-drone system designed for civilian operators including airports, critical infrastructure sites and major event venues. The Munich-based company presented the system at Drone Days in Bremen on August 27 and 28 and has started commercial availability for civilian customers.

ATOMZA uses a photon-based optical effector designed to disrupt a drone by saturating its optical sensors with high-intensity light until its guidance is impaired. Unlike kinetic interceptors or radio-frequency countermeasures, the system does not rely on an expendable interceptor or electronic jamming.

VANEA Defence lists the ATOMZA system at 195 kg with an operational lifetime of 20,000 hours. The company describes power consumption as the primary cost associated with an engagement, with no expendable round required.

The company positions the technology for environments where conventional counter-unmanned aircraft system methods face operational or legal restrictions. These include airports, ports, cities and locations where an intercepted drone falling from the sky could create an additional hazard.

According to VANEA Defence, German security authorities and critical infrastructure operators are already testing and validating ATOMZA under operational conditions. Trials with military partners are planned in the coming weeks, while the company is also holding discussions with other European authorities and international security partners.

Founded in Munich in 2025, VANEA Defence develops counter-UAS and autonomous defense technologies around a proprietary artificial intelligence architecture that the company says is developed, trained and operated in Europe. VANEA Defence operates as a brand of publicly listed SCP Standard Capital Partners AG.

The emergence of systems such as ATOMZA reflects growing European demand for counter-drone capabilities outside traditional military environments. Airports, energy infrastructure and other civilian facilities increasingly need methods of detecting and mitigating unmanned aircraft without relying exclusively on military or law-enforcement countermeasures.
