Polish Firm Partners with Northrop Grumman and ST Engineering to Expand Domestic Ammunition Production
Poland is accelerating domestic ammunition output through new industrial partnerships aimed at meeting national and NATO demand. A privately owned Polish group is working with U.S. and Singaporean defense companies to establish large-scale production lines.
A privately owned Polish defense company, Niewiadów Polish Military Group, has entered into cooperation with Northrop Grumman and ST Engineering to expand domestic ammunition production capacity.
The initiative focuses on establishing local manufacturing of 155mm artillery ammunition and 40mm rounds, supporting Poland’s ongoing efforts to strengthen supply resilience and reduce reliance on external sources. The program is aligned with Warsaw’s broader defense investment plans under the European Union Security Action for Europe framework, which prioritizes scaling up industrial output across member states.
At the center of the project is a planned automated production facility designed to deliver up to 180,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition annually. In parallel, a separate production line is expected to reach a capacity of approximately 480,000 rounds of 40mm ammunition per year. According to the company, the facilities are intended to ensure a stable and scalable supply chain for both Polish armed forces and allied users.
The expansion reflects Poland’s anticipated growth in artillery capabilities. National plans indicate a future inventory of around 1,000 self-propelled howitzers, significantly increasing demand for sustained ammunition supply and stockpiling.
The move is consistent with wider regional trends across Central and Eastern Europe, where governments and industry are working to localize defense production. Companies such as Rheinmetall have launched similar investments in ammunition manufacturing infrastructure, while demand continues to rise in response to the war in Ukraine and evolving NATO force posture requirements.
Niewiadów Polish Military Group is also positioning the project for export potential. With defense spending increasing across NATO’s eastern flank, the company aims to leverage its partnerships to accelerate production readiness while progressively expanding domestic industrial capabilities.
