Steyr Motors Secures Long-Term Supply Contract for 500 Motor-Generator Units in European Tank Program
The Austrian engine maker Steyr Motors has agreed a long-term framework contract with European land systems integrator KNDS for the delivery of at least 500 motor-generator units (MGUs) through 2034.
Austrian industrial supplier Steyr Motors has expanded its partnership with European defence systems group KNDS through a new framework agreement covering the delivery of at least 500 motor-generator units over the next decade. The long-term contract, which runs until the end of 2034, ties Austrian-made MGUs to land systems procured and assembled by KNDS, particularly the Leopard 2 main battle tank and the Leguan bridge-laying vehicle.
The motor-generator units are compact two-cylinder diesel engines with integrated generators designed to provide reliable onboard power generation for military platforms. Such units support critical electrical systems under field conditions, a capability increasingly important as combat vehicles integrate advanced digital and networked subsystems.
The agreement comes as part of expanded procurement and modernisation efforts by Germany and other NATO member states to bolster armoured force capabilities in response to the evolving security environment in Europe. The planned production scale-up of Leopard 2 variants is a central aspect of these defence modernisation programmes.
For Steyr Motors, the framework deal reinforces its position as a strategic supplier of specialised power systems within the European defence industrial base. The company highlighted that the contract secures production volumes and technological expertise at its Austrian facilities, underpinning its longstanding role in supplying mission-critical engines not only for tracked vehicles but also for marine and rail applications.
Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed, and specific delivery schedules beyond the total volume and contract duration have not been made public. The agreement aligns Steyr Motors with broader continental efforts to sustain and expand indigenous capabilities for critical defence technologies.
