Austria to Launch First Military Satellite BEACONSAT in 2027

Austria’s first military satellite, BEACONSAT, is scheduled for launch in February 2027 aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. Commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defense, the satellite will focus on detecting interference with global navigation satellite systems from orbit.

Austria is set to deploy its first military satellite, BEACONSAT, in February 2027, marking a significant step in the country’s defense space ambitions. The satellite, described as the largest ever developed in Austria, has been commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Defense and will be launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket operated by SpaceX.

The mission is designed to address the increasing disruption of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), including GPS and Galileo. These systems are critical to civil aviation, autonomous transportation, energy networks, and modern military operations. European defense authorities have identified jamming and spoofing of satellite navigation signals as a growing operational challenge, particularly in the context of hybrid threats and electronic warfare.

According to mission details released by the industrial team, BEACONSAT will test the detection and analysis of GNSS interference directly from orbit. The satellite is expected to collect data identifying when and where navigation signals are deliberately disrupted, contributing to situational awareness and resilience planning.

Austria-based GATE Space is leading the mission and is responsible for key subsystems, including propulsion, thermal control, and structural components. The project is being implemented in cooperation with Space Inventor and IGASPIN GmbH. Institutional backing comes from the Austrian Ministry of Defense and the European Space Agency, underscoring the mission’s alignment with broader European efforts to strengthen technological sovereignty in the space domain.

For Austria, BEACONSAT represents both an operational capability and an industrial milestone. The program supports the domestic space sector while integrating Austrian industry into Europe’s defense and security supply chain. At a strategic level, the mission reflects growing recognition across Europe that space infrastructure is directly linked to national security, operational readiness, and resilience.

The 2027 launch will place Austria among a small but expanding group of European states operating dedicated defense-related space assets.
