BNT TMiH Launches Domestic Drone Production, Marking a New Chapter for Bosnia’s Defense Industry

Bosnia’s state-owned defense company BNT TMiH has launched domestic drone production, unveiling single-use and reusable UAVs built entirely with local expertise and components. The move marks Bosnia and Herzegovina’s entry into the growing group of nations developing indigenous drone technology.

BNT TMiH Launches Domestic Drone Production, Marking a New Chapter for Bosnia’s Defense Industry

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s defense industry is entering a new phase. The state-owned company BNT TMiH from Novi Travnik, best known for its artillery and armored vehicle systems, has officially launched domestic production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) — both single-use and reusable drones designed for tactical and logistical applications.

Unlike many regional initiatives that rely on imported components or licensed technology, BNT’s drones have been developed entirely with local expertise and locally produced parts. The launch event was attended by Federation Prime Minister Nermin Niksic, who called it “a turning point for Bosnia’s defense and technological sovereignty.”

“This is a fully domestic product, made by our young engineers with parts produced entirely in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Niksic said. “Every package carries a line we’re proud of: A revolution in defense through modern technology. These drones were not made for aggression but to strengthen our security and defense capabilities.”

Nikšić emphasized that the new program would also create jobs and open export opportunities:

“What I’ve seen today is impressive. It’s a product that could easily attract international attention. We’ve waited until all the necessary approvals were in place — now production can begin.”

From Concept to Reality

According to Vedran Lakic, the Federation Minister of Energy, Mining, and Industry, the project began as a concept within the Ministry 18 months ago. “We proved that domestic talent and industry can build a UAV — one of the most in-demand systems in modern defense,” he said. “The leadership of BNT’s director, Besim Belegic, and the government’s support were key in turning this idea into a tangible product.”

A Strategic Leap for BNT

For BNT TMiH, traditionally a manufacturer of mortar systems, ammunition, and armored components, the move into UAV development represents a strategic diversification. The company plans to employ at least 50 new workers and expects the drone division to become a significant contributor to revenue and exports.

“This is the result of a year and a half of work, from concept and market research to obtaining all required licenses and developing the first prototypes,” said Belegic. “We’ve demonstrated that with coordination between the government and industry, Bosnia can innovate — not just assemble.”

Bosnia Joins the Drone-Capable Nations

With this development, Bosnia and Herzegovina joins the growing list of smaller nations investing in indigenous drone manufacturing, a segment increasingly seen as critical to national defense. While details about the drones’ specifications were not disclosed, the move signals a shift toward autonomy and modern warfare readiness within the Federation’s defense sector.

The BNT UAV line will reportedly cover single-use loitering munitions and multi-use cargo drones, aligning Bosnia’s defense strategy with current global trends where low-cost, high-impact aerial systems are reshaping battlefields.
