Europe Looks to Expand Greek Defence Production as Demand Increases

Growing European demand for defence equipment is increasing interest in Greece’s industrial base, particularly in electronics, unmanned systems, and ammunition production. Exports already represent a significant share of the sector’s roughly €700 million annual turnover.

European efforts to strengthen defence supply chains and reduce reliance on external sources are driving renewed interest in Greece’s defence industrial base, industry sources say. Greek companies and research institutions have stepped up involvement in areas such as unmanned systems, electronics, command-and-control technologies and ammunition production as European demand grows.

Market observers note that collaboration between private firms, universities and research centres has boosted Greek participation in emerging defence programmes. Electronics and communications systems producers, particularly those with export experience, are gaining momentum as armed forces across Europe seek advanced interoperable technologies.

The annual turnover of the Greek defence sector is estimated at around €700 million, with exports representing a significant share, and stakeholders suggest this could grow to more than €1 billion if planned investment and long-term strategies are realised.

Interest in Greek production extends to individual soldier equipment such as night-vision systems, as well as efforts to strengthen ammunition manufacturing capacity, although expansion in the latter depends on modernisation investment and stable order frameworks.

Greece’s aerospace and industrial firms remain involved in support and subcontracting work in international programmes, with potential to play a broader role in joint European defence projects. Industry representatives stress the importance of linking research, innovation and production to strengthen Greece’s position in the European defence manufacturing landscape.
