Serbia and Spain Align Defense Priorities in High-Level Consultations in Madrid
Serbia and Spain have strengthened their defence ties following bilateral consultations in Madrid, where both sides reviewed past cooperation, reaffirmed their joint work in the UNIFIL mission, and signed a new Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan outlining future activities.
Serbia and Spain have taken another step in strengthening their defence relationship following a series of bilateral consultations held this week in Madrid.
A Serbian Ministry of Defence delegation, led by Colonel Zlatko Bogosavljević, Head of the Department for International Military Cooperation, met with a Spanish team headed by Brigadier General Paulino García Diego, Advisor to the Director General for Defence Policy at Spain’s Ministry of Defence.
The talks focused on deepening practical cooperation, aligning strategic priorities, and reviewing ongoing joint activities. Both sides underscored that their most important existing cooperation remains their shared participation in the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, where Serbian and Spanish troops have worked alongside one another for years.
During the meeting, the delegations conducted a full review of past engagements and finalized the Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan, formally signing the document in Madrid. The plan outlines upcoming joint activities and areas where the two defence ministries intend to expand collaboration.
After the consultations, Colonel Bogosavljević held a separate meeting with the Director General for Defence Policy, retired Brigadier General Fernando López del Pozo, to discuss next-phase cooperation, future joint initiatives, and ways to further align Serbia–Spain defense relations in the coming years.
The consultations signal steady and pragmatic defense engagement between Belgrade and Madrid, with both ministries emphasizing continuity, operational cooperation, and long-term planning.
