1,500 European Troops to Rehearse Ukraine Deployment in Poland

At least 1,500 European troops will train in Poland in November, rehearsing deployment and logistics for a potential security mission in Ukraine after a ceasefire.

British, French, German and Polish forces are preparing a multinational military exercise in November to test the deployment and logistical support of a potential European security mission in Ukraine following a ceasefire with Russia.

At least 1,500 military personnel from European countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland, are expected to participate in military exercises in Poland next month, according to a report published by The Times on October 17.

The exercise will rehearse the movement, coordination and logistical support of multinational forces that could be deployed to Ukraine following a future ceasefire agreement with Russia.

The planned maneuvers form part of preparations by the Coalition of the Willing, a European-led initiative developing security arrangements intended to deter renewed Russian aggression after hostilities end.

Preparing a Multinational Force for Ukraine

The exercises were initially announced in July by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk following a meeting of coalition leaders in Paris. Poland agreed to host the first military drills involving British and French forces, while also preparing infrastructure to support a longer-term allied military presence.

The United Kingdom and France have established a multinational command structure for the proposed mission. In July, British Lieutenant General Tom Bateman assumed command of Multinational Force Ukraine (MNF-U), succeeding a French officer at its operational headquarters in Paris.

According to the British Ministry of Defence, the proposed force would support the regeneration of Ukraine's armed forces through training and equipment replenishment. Its wider mission would also include security assistance in the air and maritime domains.

The November exercise is expected to test the practical requirements of assembling and sustaining a multinational contingent, including the movement of personnel and logistical coordination.

No final decision has been announced to deploy these troops inside Ukraine. Any future mission remains dependent on the security situation and the arrangements agreed following a cessation of hostilities.

For European armed forces, the Poland exercise will provide an opportunity to test multinational deployment procedures before any potential operation on Ukrainian territory.
