Austrian defense technology company GuardAero has won the Protection Award at the Defence Innovation Pitch Day 2026 in Munich, Germany, for its APS1 active protection system designed to defend military vehicles against close-range drone attacks.

The Graz-based company presented its modular counter-drone technology during the October 19 event, organized by Behörden Spiegel. The event brought together defense startups, military representatives, researchers and industry specialists to examine emerging technologies with potential military applications.

GuardAero participated in the Protection category, which focused on systems intended to improve operational survivability.

APS1 Targets Close-Range Drone Threats

GuardAero's APS1 is designed to detect, track and neutralize incoming drones before they strike military vehicles. The system uses a kinetic effector to intercept threats and is intended to serve as a final defensive layer when other counter-drone measures have failed.

According to the company, APS1 covers the complete engagement process from threat detection to neutralization. Its modular architecture allows integration across different military vehicle platforms, including existing fleets, without requiring the development of entirely new vehicles.

The company has already completed successful live-fire trials and is now focusing on integrating the technology into military platforms in cooperation with defense industry partners and military users.

Cooperation With the Austrian Armed Forces

GuardAero has been working with the Austrian Armed Forces and Austria's Federal Ministry of Defence on developing vehicle-mounted counter-drone capabilities.

In May 2026, the company demonstrated APS1 on an Austrian Armed Forces vehicle during the Technology Day at the Europa-Forum Wachau. The demonstration highlighted the company's approach to developing protection systems alongside military end users.

The startup, led by CEO Lukas Kerschdorfer, also secured a financing round earlier in 2026 backed by Angels United and BKlemen Beteiligungsgesellschaft. The funding is intended to support further development, vehicle integration and business expansion.

The Munich award comes as GuardAero continues developing APS1 toward broader military vehicle integration. While the company has reported successful live-fire testing, it has not announced a production contract or operational deployment of the system. The distinction recognizes the technology's development rather than a confirmed military procurement award.
