NATO Launches New Tools to Expand Defense Industry Output
NATO launched the Front Door for Industry and NATO Engine to simplify procurement access and connect factory capacity across the Alliance.
NATO launched the NATO Front Door for Industry and NATO Engine on July 7, 2026, at the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum in Ankara, Türkiye, to simplify industry access to Alliance opportunities and expand production capacity. The NATO defense industry initiatives are intended to convert rising allied budgets into faster industrial output by publishing a consolidated demand signal and connecting companies with available factory capacity across Europe, Canada and the United States.
Front Door centralizes procurement access and demand signals
The NATO Front Door for Industry is designed as a single entry point for procurement opportunities, innovation events, testing activities and other channels for working with NATO. NATO says procurement opportunities are normally limited to entities registered in member countries, unless a competition states otherwise.
The platform will also carry NATO’s first publicly released consolidated unclassified demand signal, derived from the NATO Defense Planning Process. The Strategy for Industry-NATO Cooperation says the demand signal is intended to give companies earlier visibility of Alliance capability needs and support longer-term investment and production planning.
The same strategy makes the Front Door the principal vehicle for industry engagement with the NATO Enterprise and calls for dedicated opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups. NATO plans to expand the platform iteratively, including a calendar of engagement opportunities and tools to aggregate information from procurement portals.
NATO Engine links factories with companies that need scale
The NATO Engine focuses on manufacturing rather than procurement visibility. Managed by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, the framework is intended to connect manufacturers and factories with flexible capacity to companies that need facilities to scale production, including non-traditional defense suppliers.
The NATO Support and Procurement Agency said on July 16 that it had launched the NATO Engine pilot and planned to publish a static database of vetted manufacturers by the end of September 2026. The database is set to cover additive manufacturing, engineering services and manufacturing-as-a-service, while the agency’s launch page listed 32 Allies, more than 100 active opportunities and more than 840 companies.
NATO has identified air defense and strike capabilities as areas where additional industrial capacity is particularly important. The Engine is part of the Alliance’s Innovation Scale-Up Package, which combines stronger demand signals, private capital mobilization and access to manufacturing capacity.
Ankara initiatives connect spending targets to production
The industrial tools sit behind a broader NATO effort to turn higher defense spending into deliverable military capability. At the 2025 Hague Summit, Allies committed to invest 5% of gross domestic product annually by 2035, including at least 3.5% for core defense requirements and up to 1.5% for broader defense and security-related spending such as infrastructure, resilience, innovation and industrial development.
At the 2026 Ankara Summit, NATO said European Allies and Canada had increased core defense investments by more than USD 139 billion since the Hague commitment. The Alliance also endorsed the Strategy for Industry-NATO Cooperation, which sets three priorities: deeper communication with industry, faster innovation and interoperability, and stronger production capacity.
The Defense Industry Forum paired those process changes with procurement and capability announcements covering airborne surveillance, maritime intelligence, drones, strike systems, air and missile defense and multinational production.
CEE and SEE suppliers gain a clearer route into NATO demand
For defense companies in Central and Eastern Europe and South-Eastern Europe, the main effect is a potentially lower information barrier to NATO opportunities. Suppliers in countries such as Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Croatia and Slovenia can use a centralized platform to track procurement and innovation activity instead of navigating separate NATO channels.
The NATO Engine could also create openings for regional manufacturers with flexible production lines, engineering capability or additive manufacturing capacity to participate in wider transatlantic supply chains. The framework does not guarantee contracts, and participating firms still face NATO procurement, competition and security requirements.
That distinction matters for a region where governments are expanding ammunition, missile, vehicle and electronics capacity while seeking more local participation in multinational programs. Better visibility of NATO demand can help companies decide where to invest, but the commercial effect will depend on how quickly demand signals translate into funded orders and multi-year contracts.
