Poland’s Bumech Defense Plans Local Production of Canadian Drones
Poland’s Bumech Defense has partnered with Canada’s Custom Prototypes to distribute Maplewing drones across Europe and prepare local production in Poland.
Polish defense company Bumech Defense has signed a cooperation agreement with Canadian manufacturer Custom Prototypes Inc. covering exclusive European distribution and planned production of unmanned aircraft in Poland.
The agreement was signed on October 6 and disclosed by Bumech Defense Partners on October 7. It covers dual-use unmanned aircraft intended for both military and civilian applications, with Bumech Defense initially acting as the exclusive European distributor.
The companies plan a second stage that would move production of the Canadian unmanned aircraft to Poland. Bumech Defense will prepare the necessary infrastructure while building a European distribution, technical support and service network.
No contract value, production volume or timeline for the start of Polish manufacturing has been disclosed.
Custom Prototypes brings Maplewing drones to Europe
Toronto-based Custom Prototypes has more than two decades of experience in rapid prototyping, precision manufacturing and components for unmanned aircraft.
The company has also developed its own family of unmanned aircraft under the Maplewing brand.
Its current portfolio includes compact fixed-wing and quadcopter one-way attack systems, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft, heavy-lift multicopters, high-speed drone interceptors and a longer-range fixed-wing platform intended for deep-strike missions.
Canadian government procurement records identify several Maplewing projects at different stages of development. These include a compact fixed-wing one-way attack drone, an ISR platform, an FPV quadcopter, a heavy-lift aircraft, a high-speed interceptor and a long-range fixed-wing one-way attack system.
Custom Prototypes has also participated in Canadian defense programs aimed at expanding domestic production of low-cost tactical unmanned aircraft.
The Polish agreement does not specify which Maplewing platforms will be introduced first in Europe.
Bumech will establish a drone operator training center
The cooperation extends beyond distribution and manufacturing.
Bumech Defense and Custom Prototypes plan to establish a training center in Poland for unmanned aircraft operators. The facility is expected to provide both basic and specialist courses supported by an international instructor team.
Bumech will also provide technical and servicing capabilities for customers in the European markets covered by the agreement.
The framework agreement has an initial duration of three years. It can be automatically extended if agreed performance thresholds are reached.
Detailed commercial conditions will be defined separately as individual projects move forward.
Bumech Defense is rapidly expanding its defense portfolio
The drone agreement forms part of a broader expansion by Bumech Defense into Poland's defense industrial market.
The company has recently pursued partnerships covering armored vehicle modernization, counter-drone technologies, weapons systems and military vehicle servicing.
In October, Bumech Defense also signed an agreement with Turkish manufacturer Sarsılmaz covering distribution of small arms and weapon systems in Poland.
The company's production base is expanding at the same time. Bumech Defense recently received industrial assets in Katowice intended to support machining, production, overhaul and modernization work for the defense sector.
The Custom Prototypes agreement adds unmanned systems to that developing portfolio and gives the Canadian company a potential industrial route into the wider European market.
The move also fits a broader Polish trend toward bringing foreign unmanned technologies into domestic production. AdriaDefense recently reported on Poland’s agreement with Shield AI covering potential X-BAT production and technology cooperation.
For Bumech and Custom Prototypes, however, the next milestone will be the transition from distribution to actual manufacturing. Neither company has yet disclosed where the Polish production line would be located, when it would begin operations or which Maplewing aircraft would enter production first.
What did Bumech Defense and Custom Prototypes agree?
The companies signed a three-year framework agreement covering exclusive European distribution of Custom Prototypes unmanned aircraft, preparations for production in Poland and creation of a drone operator training center.
Will Canadian drones be manufactured in Poland?
That is the stated second phase of the cooperation. Bumech Defense plans to prepare infrastructure for production in Poland, but manufacturing has not yet started and no launch date has been announced.
Which drones could be produced?
Custom Prototypes develops several Maplewing unmanned aircraft, including one-way attack, ISR, heavy-lift and interceptor platforms. The companies have not disclosed which models will be localized first.
How much is the agreement worth?
Neither Bumech Defense nor Custom Prototypes has disclosed a financial value for the framework agreement.
