German defense technology company Quantum Systems has disclosed detailed specifications for its new Subvex unmanned underwater vehicle, including a 533 mm diameter designed around the NATO torpedo tube standard. The 400 kg UUV can operate at depths of up to 6,000 meters and is designed for underwater intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

The specifications provide a clearer picture of Subvex after Quantum Systems introduced the platform alongside its Seavex unmanned surface vehicle in Portugal on September 14. The two platforms are undergoing prototype testing during NATO's REPMUS 2026 exercise as Quantum Systems develops a wider autonomous system spanning the air, land, surface and underwater domains.

Subvex combines 6,000-meter depth with 533 mm dimensions

Subvex measures 4.2 meters in length and 533 mm in diameter, with a total weight of 400 kg. Quantum Systems lists the diameter as compatible with the NATO torpedo tube standard, while company maritime executive Dirk Zademack told German defense publication hartpunkt that the vehicle was designed so it can also be deployed through a torpedo tube.

The UUV carries a 42 kWh battery and has endurance of up to four days while operating actively. It has a surveillance speed of 3 knots, a maximum speed of 8 knots and capacity for payloads weighing up to 20 kg.

Its sensor package includes a side-scan sonar with a stated range of 1,000 meters, a hydrophone array, a forward-looking imaging sonar rated for depths of 6,000 meters and an ultra-short baseline navigation and communications system. Quantum Systems also lists Doppler velocity log navigation rated to 6,000 meters.

The company says Subvex can settle on the seabed and switch to passive surveillance. In that configuration, Quantum Systems envisages longer-duration monitoring of underwater activity without keeping the vehicle continuously in motion.

Torpedo-tube deployment expands submarine applications

The 533 mm form factor is significant because 533 mm torpedo tubes are widely used on military submarines. Designing Subvex around that diameter creates the option of deploying the UUV from a submarine rather than relying exclusively on surface ships or shore-based launch infrastructure.

Zademack outlined one potential concept in which a submarine could deploy one or more Subvex vehicles near an operational area. The UUVs could then travel independently toward a designated location and conduct passive seabed surveillance, according to hartpunkt.

Another potential mission involves monitoring critical underwater infrastructure such as cables and pipelines. Quantum Systems lists critical subsea infrastructure protection, maritime surveillance and distributed underwater awareness among the intended applications for Subvex.

The company has not announced a military customer for Subvex or disclosed a procurement contract for the system.

Seavex acts as a surface hub for underwater drones

Subvex forms part of a broader maritime architecture rather than operating solely as a standalone UUV. Quantum Systems has paired it with Seavex, a long-endurance unmanned surface vehicle designed to act as a surface mission hub.

Seavex has a stated endurance of up to two months and payload capacity of up to 400 kg. It can launch and recover unmanned aerial vehicles while also docking Subvex vehicles, recharging their batteries and transferring mission data.

Both platforms connect through Quantum Systems' MOSAIC UXS software architecture. The company intends the software layer to coordinate aerial, ground, surface and underwater autonomous platforms and combine their sensor information into a common operational environment.

REPMUS 2026 testing precedes planned 2027 pre-series

The latest information also provides a clearer development timeline. Quantum Systems is testing the maritime system at technology readiness level 5/6 during REPMUS 2026 in Portugal, according to hartpunkt.

The company is simultaneously adapting the prototype designs for scalable production. Zademack indicated that Quantum Systems is targeting a pre-series configuration in 2027, although the company has not announced a date for full-rate production.

That timeline makes the current NATO exercise an important development phase for the new maritime portfolio. It also places Subvex and Seavex within a wider European push toward autonomous systems for persistent maritime surveillance and protection of subsea infrastructure.

Questions about the Quantum Systems Subvex UUV

How deep can the Quantum Systems Subvex operate?

Quantum Systems lists a maximum operating depth of 6,000 meters. Its forward imaging sonar, navigation equipment and other underwater systems are specified for operations at that depth.

Can Subvex be launched from a submarine torpedo tube?

Subvex has a diameter of 533 mm, which Quantum Systems identifies as the NATO torpedo tube standard. A Quantum Systems maritime executive has also said the UUV was designed for deployment through a torpedo tube.

How long can Subvex remain underwater?

Quantum Systems lists active endurance of up to four days. The vehicle can also settle on the seabed for passive surveillance, with the company describing longer-duration monitoring in that mode.

When could Subvex enter production?

Quantum Systems is currently conducting prototype testing at technology readiness level 5/6 and is working toward a pre-series system in 2027, according to information provided to hartpunkt. No full-rate production date or launch customer has been announced.
