Rheinmetall and Deutsche Telekom Partner on Civilian Counter-Drone Protection Systems
Rheinmetall and Deutsche Telekom announced a joint development initiative focused on counter-drone solutions for civilian critical infrastructure. The cooperation combines Rheinmetall’s sensor and interceptor technologies with Telekom’s communications and digital network capabilities.
German defense group Rheinmetall and Deutsche Telekom have launched a joint initiative to develop integrated counter-drone systems aimed at protecting civilian critical infrastructure across Germany.
The companies stated that the cooperation will focus on combining drone detection, digital networking, and defensive effectors into a single architecture designed for use around industrial facilities, transport infrastructure, ports, and energy assets.
According to the companies, Rheinmetall will contribute expertise in sensors, effectors, and air defense technologies, while Deutsche Telekom will provide telecommunications infrastructure, cloud connectivity, cybersecurity capabilities, and data analysis tools.
The initiative reflects increasing concern in Europe regarding the use of commercial and modified drones near military sites, airports, and critical infrastructure. Recent incidents involving unauthorized drone activity have intensified discussions around civilian airspace protection and hybrid threat response capabilities.
The planned system is expected to include early warning and detection functions using passive radio-frequency sensors integrated into telecommunications infrastructure. The companies also indicated that future concepts could involve the identification of drones operating through mobile networks by analyzing data traffic anomalies.
Rheinmetall stated that the project could also incorporate jamming technologies, interceptor drones, and directed-energy solutions as part of a layered defense approach. The companies emphasized that the current effort is focused on civilian security applications rather than conventional air defense systems.
The cooperation aligns with broader European efforts to strengthen domestic security technologies and reduce dependence on non-European suppliers in areas linked to critical infrastructure protection, digital sovereignty, and counter-uncrewed aerial systems.
For Rheinmetall, the partnership expands the company’s growing activity in the drone and counter-drone sector, which has become a strategic growth area across NATO and European markets.
