Romanian Defense Chief Reviews NATO Battle Group Training in Poland
Romanian Deputy Chief of Defense Lt. Gen. Dragoș-Dumitru Iacob visited the NATO Forward Land Forces Battle Group in Poland to assess training infrastructure, multinational readiness, and Romanian air defense operations.
Romanian Deputy Chief of Defense Lt. Gen. Dragoș-Dumitru Iacob inspected the NATO Forward Land Forces Battle Group Poland at the Bemowo Piskie Training Area on July 23.
The visit focused on the battle group’s training activities, infrastructure, operational capabilities, and coordination among allied contingents deployed on NATO’s eastern flank. The formation includes personnel from Romania, Croatia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Polish military officials briefed Iacob on the facilities available at Bemowo Piskie, including live-fire ranges, infantry training areas, close-quarters facilities, engineering ranges, and sectors intended for mechanized and armored units.
The Romanian delegation also received information about air defense coverage, target systems, firing distances, and the organization of the Polish Armed Forces’ 15th Mechanized Brigade. Polish representatives outlined planned equipment upgrades for the formation.
Lt. Col. Steven Saxion, commander of the US Army’s 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment and the NATO battle group, presented the unit’s multinational structure and rotation model. The briefing also covered recent counter-uncrewed aircraft system training conducted by the battalion in Hohenfels, Germany.
Romania’s contribution includes the 348th Air Defense Battalion. Its commander presented the unit’s upcoming training schedule and explained its role within the multinational force.
During a static display, Iacob reviewed armored and tactical vehicles operated by participating forces. He also met Romanian, Polish, US, Croatian, and British personnel alongside Polish Vice Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Karol Dymanowski.
The deployment of Romanian air defense personnel in Poland highlights Bucharest’s contribution to NATO’s regional deterrence posture beyond Romania’s own territory. It also gives Romanian units access to multinational training environments and supports interoperability with allied command structures and ground forces.
The visit concluded with discussions on future cooperation and further integration of national contingents within the battle group.
