Romanian fighter jets intercepted and destroyed two jet-powered Geran-family attack drones that entered the country's airspace on October 17, as drone incursions and attacks on commercial shipping intensify in the Black Sea.

Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jets shot down two Geran-family attack drones over the country's territorial waters on Saturday, October 17, according to Romania's Ministry of National Defence.

The aircraft were scrambled from the 86th Air Base at Borcea at 17:43 local time after Romanian radar systems detected multiple aerial targets approximately 120 kilometres east of Snake Island, moving southwest.

The first drone entered Romanian airspace at 17:59 and was destroyed two minutes later, southeast of the coastal town of Sulina. The second entered at 18:01 and was shot down at 18:05, east of Sulina.

In an updated statement, the ministry identified both aircraft as jet-powered attack drones from the Geran family, a type associated with Russia's long-range unmanned strike operations.

Repeated Airspace Incursions Near Ukraine

The interception follows a series of security incidents along Romania's border with Ukraine and in the western Black Sea.

According to the defence ministry, Romanian radar systems detected aerial targets operating near the Ukrainian border on eight separate occasions during the preceding week. In four of those incidents, unmanned aircraft briefly entered Romanian airspace.

The ministry also reported that several commercial vessels had been struck by drones in the Black Sea during the same period, including within Romanian territorial waters.

Romania, a NATO member bordering Ukraine, has increasingly deployed fighter aircraft to respond to aerial threats approaching its territory. The latest interception demonstrates the growing operational demands on Romanian air defence as drone activity extends beyond Ukrainian airspace.

The Ministry of National Defence said it continues to adapt its airspace surveillance and response procedures to protect Romanian territory and territorial waters.
