Defense cooperation between Slovakia and India is evolving from a traditional supplier-customer relationship into a more reciprocal industrial partnership, according to Slovak Ambassador to India Robert Maxian. The remarks come ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's planned visit to Slovakia, which is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties.

Maxian stated that Slovakia has supplied defense technologies and military equipment to India since the establishment of the Slovak Republic in 1993, working with Indian defense institutions, public sector manufacturers, and the Ministry of Defence. However, he noted that India's defense industrial expansion and localization efforts have altered the dynamics of the relationship.

According to the ambassador, cooperation now increasingly involves private-sector companies and joint projects. He highlighted that Slovakia has also begun acquiring defense technologies from India, describing it as a notable development in bilateral defense ties and an indication of India's growing role as a defense exporter.

The comments underscore a broader trend in India's defense sector, where domestic production and export capabilities have expanded under ongoing industrial development initiatives. For Slovakia, a NATO member with active military modernization programs, access to Indian technologies could create new opportunities for industrial cooperation and supply chain diversification.

The defense relationship forms part of a wider economic partnership between the two countries. Maxian identified the automotive sector as a key area of bilateral trade, with Slovakia exporting vehicles to India while importing automotive components from Indian manufacturers. He also indicated that a future India-EU free trade agreement could support further growth in commercial and industrial cooperation.

Modi's upcoming trip will mark the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Slovakia since the country's independence in 1993. The visit follows a series of high-level exchanges between the two nations and is expected to address trade, industrial cooperation, and strategic sectors including defense.
