UK Invests £770M in 2,000-Km Deep Precision Strike

The UK is investing £770 million in a joint program with Germany to develop stealth and hypersonic strike weapons with ranges exceeding 2,000 km.

The United Kingdom plans to invest an initial £770 million over four years in its joint Deep Precision Strike program with Germany, which is developing a family of conventional weapons with ranges exceeding 2,000 kilometers. The program will initially focus on ground-launched systems and is expected to deliver operational capability in the 2030s, before potentially expanding to air- and sea-launched variants. 

The British Ministry of Defence describes the effort as covering both stealth and hypersonic weapons. London and Berlin are developing the capability under the bilateral Trinity House Agreement on Defence Cooperation, signed in October 2024, while linking the work to the wider European effort to rebuild long-range conventional strike capacity. 

The £770 million allocation forms part of a broader British investment in long-range fires. The UK has identified £3 billion for long-range weapons programs, including the German partnership and the separate Stratus program with France and Italy. 

UK and Germany target weapons beyond 2,000 kilometers

London and Berlin have defined a range requirement that places Deep Precision Strike well beyond most conventional weapons currently fielded by European NATO members.

The British Ministry of Defence said the planned family will include future stealth cruise and hypersonic weapons capable of traveling more than 2,000 kilometers. The two governments expect the capability to enter service during the 2030s. 

Development will begin around ground-launched weapons. Air and naval applications will also be explored, potentially creating a common family of long-range weapons deployable across several domains rather than a single missile and launcher combination. 

The program remains in development, and neither government has publicly identified a final missile configuration, prime contractor, warhead, speed or detailed deployment schedule.

The £770 million figure should therefore be understood as an initial British investment in developing the capability rather than the value of a production contract for a defined missile.

Germany is building several long-range strike options

The bilateral program sits alongside Germany's wider effort to close its long-range conventional strike gap.

Berlin is pursuing modernization of its existing Taurus cruise missile inventory and development of Taurus Neo while also seeking systems that can provide additional capability before new European weapons become operational. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has identified the lack of sufficient deep-strike capability as a gap that Berlin needs to address. 

Germany has also moved toward acquiring the U.S. Army's Typhon ground-based launcher and Tomahawk cruise missiles. The United States agreed at the July 2026 NATO summit to German procurement and stationing of the systems, according to Janes. 

That creates two different timelines. U.S.-origin systems can provide an interim capability, while the British-German Deep Precision Strike program is intended to establish a European-developed capability beyond 2,000 kilometers in the next decade.

Germany is simultaneously testing additional strike options at shorter ranges. In September, the German Navy completed operational firings of the Israeli-developed Naval LORA ballistic missile in the North Atlantic, adding a potential maritime strike option to Berlin's expanding portfolio.

European missile programs are moving into multiple range classes

The British-German project also overlaps with the European Long-Range Strike Approach, known as ELSA.

France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom are participating in the initiative. The countries are examining different strike categories rather than developing a single common missile, including weapons with ranges extending beyond 2,000 kilometers. 

Britain has separately launched a wider initiative intended to mobilize around $50 billion over a decade for European deep precision strike capabilities. Defense News reported in July that the framework is designed to coordinate and finance multiple national and multinational programs rather than create one standardized weapon. 

European industry is also expanding production outside these government-led development programs. U.S. startup Covenant plans to manufacture its Anthem cruise missile in Saxony from 2027, illustrating the parallel push for weapons that can reach production before Europe's next generation of sovereign deep-strike systems enters service.

The distinction matters. The UK-German Deep Precision Strike program targets a post-2,000-kilometer capability for the 2030s, while Germany and other NATO members are simultaneously buying, testing and industrializing weapons that can address shorter-term requirements.
