YIT Lietuva to Build Lithuania's Leopard 2A8 Tank Plant in Kaunas

YIT Lietuva has secured a contract to build Lithuania's future Leopard 2A8 tank assembly and maintenance facility in the Kaunas Free Economic Zone, marking another milestone in the country's effort to establish domestic heavy armored vehicle support capabilities. The approximately EUR 29 million project will provide production, assembly, and long-term maintenance infrastructure for Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks and other heavy equipment operated by the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Construction is scheduled to begin in August and conclude in November 2027, with the first tank expected to leave the production line before the end of 2028. 

The agreement was signed between YIT Lietuva and UAB Lithuania Defence Services under a Design-Build model, making the Finnish-owned construction company responsible for both engineering design and construction of the 13,000-square-meter facility. The contract will be recorded in YIT's third-quarter order book. 

Kaunas expands its role in Lithuania's defense industry

The new plant represents one of Lithuania's most significant investments in armored vehicle sustainment infrastructure. Once operational, the site will support assembly, testing, maintenance, and lifecycle support for Leopard 2A8 tanks while also servicing other heavy military equipment.

The facility has been designed specifically for armored vehicle operations. Planned infrastructure includes three overhead cranes, a dedicated tank testing track, an immersion pool equipped with extraction systems, and an inclination testing ramp. YIT Lietuva will also deliver the project to A++ energy efficiency standards while using Building Information Modeling throughout design and construction. According to the company, the project is expected to create around 100 jobs, including approximately 70 production positions and 30 administrative roles. 

Industrial cooperation supports faster Leopard 2A8 deliveries

The project forms part of Lithuania's broader industrial cooperation program linked to its Leopard 2A8 acquisition. Lithuania previously agreed with KNDS Deutschland, Rheinmetall Landsysteme, and Lithuania Defence Services to establish domestic assembly and maintenance capabilities as part of the country's tank procurement program.

The Lithuanian government has designated the assembly project as strategically important for national security, allowing accelerated implementation. Domestic assembly is expected to shorten delivery timelines, strengthen long-term maintenance capabilities, and expand Lithuania's defense industrial base while supporting the deployment of NATO forces in the region.
