Austria’s Frequentis Wins EUROCONTROL Surveillance Contract Through 2031

Austria’s Frequentis has secured a new EUROCONTROL contract through 2031 to maintain and develop ARTAS, the surveillance system supporting around 90% of Europe’s daily flights.

Vienna-based technology group Frequentis has secured a new long-term contract from EUROCONTROL to maintain and further develop one of Europe's most widely used air traffic surveillance systems, extending a partnership that began 25 years ago.

The agreement, announced on October 29, 2026, covers the sixth phase of the Centralised ARTAS Maintenance and Operational Support program (CAMOS VI). Under the contract, Frequentis will remain EUROCONTROL's industrial partner for the Air Traffic Management Surveillance Tracker and Server (ARTAS), with support and development activities continuing through 2031. Financial terms were not disclosed.

ARTAS plays a central role in European aviation infrastructure, processing surveillance information used to monitor approximately 90% of daily flight movements across European airspace. Developed by EUROCONTROL on behalf of its member states, the platform has more than 50 operational installations and provides air traffic controllers with a consolidated picture of aircraft movements.

How ARTAS Supports European Air Traffic Surveillance

The system combines data from multiple surveillance technologies, including primary and secondary radars, Mode S transponders, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and multilateration systems. By processing these inputs, ARTAS produces a consistent view of aircraft positions, movements and flight information, enabling air traffic control centers to coordinate operations across national boundaries.

The new CAMOS VI agreement covers software maintenance, technical support and further improvements to the surveillance platform. EUROCONTROL's ARTAS and SDDS Services Manager, Antonio Principe, said the program is essential for maintaining the system's operational performance and adapting it to the changing requirements of European air traffic management.

Although primarily associated with civilian aviation, ARTAS surveillance data can also be distributed to military air traffic control units connected to the network. This makes interoperability between civilian and military airspace management an important part of the broader European surveillance infrastructure, particularly as countries seek to improve operational coordination and system resilience.

Frequentis Strengthens Its Position in European Aviation Infrastructure

Frequentis has served as EUROCONTROL's industrial partner for ARTAS since 2001. Its subsidiary Frequentis Comsoft, based in Germany, specializes in surveillance technologies, aeronautical information management and air traffic management software.

Josef Kutschi, Managing Director of Frequentis Comsoft, described the latest award as a continuation of the companies' 25-year partnership and their work to adapt ARTAS to new operational and technological requirements.

The agreement follows another major European project involving Frequentis. Earlier in October, the company announced its leadership of the €25.9 million NATICA air traffic modernization project, which brings together 14 partners to develop cloud-based aviation services, advanced data sharing and AI-assisted air traffic control tools.

Together, the projects reinforce Frequentis' position as a European supplier of safety-critical aviation technology, spanning established surveillance infrastructure and next-generation air traffic management systems.
