Bundeswehr Orders Additional Büffel Recovery Vehicles from Rheinmetall
Germany has placed a new order for 23 Büffel armored recovery vehicles as the Bundeswehr continues to expand its heavy land forces support capabilities.
The German Bundeswehr has awarded Rheinmetall a contract for the procurement of 23 additional Bergepanzer 3 Büffel armored recovery vehicles, according to reports published on June 23.
The Büffel is one of the German Army's primary recovery platforms, designed to support armored formations by towing, repairing, and recovering damaged main battle tanks and other tracked vehicles in operational environments. The latest order will further strengthen the Bundeswehr's ability to sustain armored units as Germany continues to expand its land warfare capabilities.
The procurement comes amid a broader modernization effort across the German armed forces, including investments in combat vehicles, ammunition, logistics, and support equipment. Berlin has accelerated defense spending since 2022, with a growing focus on readiness, stockpile replenishment, and the expansion of deployable forces for NATO missions.
For Rheinmetall, the new contract adds to a series of recent Bundeswehr orders covering armored vehicles, ammunition, transport platforms, and battlefield support systems. The company remains one of the key beneficiaries of Germany's long-term military modernization program and increasing European defense expenditure.
Investor reaction was positive following reports of the order, with shares of Rheinmetall rising during trading. Other German defense companies, including RENK and HENSOLDT, also recorded gains as investors responded to continued procurement activity by the Bundeswehr.
The latest purchase underscores the growing emphasis placed on combat support and recovery assets, which have become increasingly important as European armies rebuild armored force structures and prepare for high-intensity operational scenarios.
