Abu Dhabi-based defense technology group EDGE has completed the acquisition of a controlling stake in Italian propulsion specialist CMD, establishing a new European manufacturing base for advanced engines and preparing to expand production for unmanned aerial systems.

The transaction was finalized in Rome on October 26, 2026, following an initial agreement signed in May at CMD's manufacturing facility in Atella, southern Italy.

The acquisition gives EDGE access to more than 35 years of Italian expertise in piston engines, precision manufacturing and powertrain technologies. The group plans substantial investment in CMD's manufacturing capacity and research and development, with engines for EDGE's unmanned aerial systems identified as an immediate priority.

Discussions are already underway concerning large-volume engine orders, although the companies have not disclosed confirmed quantities, contract values or production schedules.

Drone Engines Become Immediate Industrial Priority

CMD specializes in the design, prototyping and manufacturing of propulsion systems for automotive, aviation and maritime applications.

For EDGE, the acquisition represents an opportunity to integrate European engine manufacturing capabilities into its expanding portfolio of unmanned aircraft and autonomous systems.

The company confirmed that discussions on large-volume orders for engines intended for EDGE unmanned aerial platforms are underway. Italian media reported that some of these orders could materialize before the end of 2026, although no contracts have yet been confirmed.

The investment is expected to support additional production capacity and accelerate the development of both conventional and next-generation propulsion technologies.

EDGE Managing Director and CEO Hamad Al Marar described the acquisition as an important step toward establishing a European propulsion manufacturing hub.

According to the company, the strategy combines CMD's engineering expertise with EDGE's financial resources and international customer network, enabling the Italian manufacturer to develop products for export markets.

The potential industrial impact extends beyond military drones. EDGE is also examining applications for CMD's high-performance engines in maritime systems, including possible cooperation with its naval shipbuilding subsidiary, Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB).

CMD will continue supplying its existing automotive customers while expanding into defense-related and other advanced propulsion markets.

Italian Manufacturing and Management to Remain in Place

The acquisition does not involve a complete transfer of ownership away from the Italian founding family.

Mariano and Giorgio Negri, descendants of CMD's founders, will retain a significant minority shareholding and continue participating in the company's management.

Mariano Negri, CEO of CMD Group, said the partnership would support increased production capacity, technological development and international expansion.

The business was established in 1989 and maintains its principal industrial operations in Atella, in Italy's Basilicata region, together with research and engineering operations near Caserta.

According to CMD's previously published corporate information, the company employed more than 220 people and generated approximately €40 million in revenue in 2025, compared with €38.5 million in 2024.

EDGE and CMD will now jointly develop an integration plan covering industrial cooperation, manufacturing expansion and the protection of existing technical expertise.

The final acquisition price and the amount of planned capital investment have not been disclosed.

EDGE Expands Its European Defense Manufacturing Network

The CMD acquisition is part of a wider European expansion strategy pursued by EDGE, which launched EDGE Europe in Paris in June 2026.

The group has established or announced industrial investments, acquisitions and partnerships across several European markets, including Estonia, Poland, Switzerland, France and Italy.

Its European portfolio includes interests in Estonian unmanned ground vehicle manufacturer Milrem Robotics, Swiss unmanned aircraft specialist ANAVIA and Polish aerospace company Flaris.

EDGE has also developed industrial partnerships with major European defense manufacturers, including Leonardo, Fincantieri and Safran.

In Germany, the company is exploring naval technology cooperation with TKMS. As AdriaDefense reported in September, the two groups signed an agreement to examine integrated underwater surveillance and protection systems.

The CMD acquisition adds a specialized propulsion manufacturer to this network, potentially enabling EDGE to strengthen its control over an important part of the unmanned systems supply chain.

The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Basilicata regional government covering industrial cooperation, skills development and technology partnerships.

European Drone Engine Manufacturing Attracts Growing Investment

Propulsion technology has become an increasingly important area of investment as defense manufacturers expand their unmanned aircraft portfolios and seek reliable access to engines and critical components.

The acquisition also reflects a broader European trend toward vertical integration, in which defense groups acquire specialized technology suppliers rather than relying exclusively on external manufacturers.

A comparable development occurred in Serbia, where Czech defense group Czechoslovak Group acquired a majority stake in UAV propulsion specialist MUST Solutions through its AviaNera Technologies subsidiary.

AdriaDefense previously reported on CSG's acquisition of the Serbian manufacturer, which develops turbojet and turbofan engines for unmanned aircraft.

Although CMD and MUST Solutions work with different propulsion technologies, both transactions demonstrate growing industrial interest in securing access to specialized engine design and manufacturing expertise.

For European suppliers, the expansion of these manufacturing networks could create opportunities in precision machining, engine components, electronics, testing equipment and research partnerships.

Whether those opportunities translate into new contracts will depend on individual procurement programs and manufacturing requirements.

Next Steps: Production Expansion and UAV Engine Orders

The immediate priority for EDGE and CMD is to complete their industrial integration plan and advance discussions on major engine orders for unmanned aircraft.

EDGE has confirmed its intention to invest in production capacity and research and development, while preserving CMD's existing industrial operations and management expertise in Italy.

The acquisition provides EDGE with an established European engineering and manufacturing business rather than requiring the group to build a propulsion production operation from scratch.

The next significant development will be the announcement of confirmed engine orders and the scale of investment planned for CMD's Italian facilities.
