EU Defense Fund Allocates Over €300 Million to Projects Involving Bulgarian Firms
Several Bulgarian companies are participating in projects backed by more than €300 million in funding from the European Defence Fund. The initiatives focus on cyber defense, space technologies, and artificial intelligence.
The European Commission has selected a new set of defense research and development projects under the European Defence Fund, with total funding exceeding €300 million. Among the participants are multiple Bulgarian companies involved in programs spanning cyber security, space systems, and artificial intelligence applications.
According to official information, the selected projects aim to strengthen the European Union’s technological base in priority domains. Cyber defense remains a key area, with initiatives focused on resilience, threat detection, and secure communications. Bulgarian firms are contributing to these efforts as part of multinational industrial consortia.
In the space domain, projects include the development of capabilities linked to surveillance, situational awareness, and secure data processing. Participation from Bulgarian entities reflects the country’s gradual expansion into higher value segments of the defense and aerospace supply chain.
Artificial intelligence is another central focus, with funded programs targeting decision-support tools, autonomous systems, and data analysis. The inclusion of Bulgarian companies in these projects indicates alignment with broader EU efforts to accelerate defense innovation and reduce technological dependencies.
The European Defence Fund is designed to promote cross-border cooperation and strengthen the competitiveness of the European defense industry. The latest funding round continues to emphasize collaboration between large system integrators, small and medium-sized enterprises, and research institutions across member states.
For Bulgaria, participation in EDF-backed programs provides access to funding, partnerships, and advanced development frameworks. It also positions local companies within long-term European capability development cycles tied to NATO and EU defense planning priorities.
