Germany Arrests Suspected Russian Spy Accused of Targeting Defense Industry
German prosecutors arrest a suspected Russian spy accused of gathering intelligence on European arms manufacturers and NATO's eastern flank.
German prosecutors say a Ukrainian national gathered information on European arms manufacturing, military personnel and NATO's eastern flank on behalf of Russian intelligence.
German authorities arrested a Ukrainian national in the state of Brandenburg on Thursday, October 22, on suspicion of conducting espionage for a Russian intelligence service, according to the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office.
The suspect, identified as Vadym Y., allegedly collected information concerning European defense manufacturers, military infrastructure and personnel associated with NATO's eastern flank.
According to prosecutors, the suspect had maintained contact with a Russian intelligence service through an intermediary since at least July 2025.
European Arms Manufacturers Among Intelligence Targets
Investigators allege that the information collected included details about the production of armored vehicles, ammunition and explosives, alongside intelligence concerning military personnel and installations involved in securing NATO's eastern flank.
Some information was obtained from publicly available sources, while other details were reportedly sought through direct contacts with individuals working in the European defense industry.
The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has not publicly identified the companies or military facilities involved, nor disclosed whether classified industrial information was compromised.
The case highlights the use of both open-source intelligence gathering and industry contacts in suspected foreign intelligence operations targeting Europe's defense sector.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge at Germany's Federal Court of Justice on October 23, when a decision on pre-trial detention is expected.
The allegations remain under investigation, and no conviction has been reported.
