India and Slovakia have formally upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership, marking a significant step in political, economic, and defense cooperation between the two countries. The announcement followed talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico during Modi's visit to Bratislava, the first by an Indian prime minister since Slovakia's independence.

The two governments signed a broad package of agreements and memoranda covering defense cooperation, digital technologies, labor mobility, higher education, scientific research, tourism, quantum communications, critical infrastructure protection, and cultural exchanges. Officials also agreed to pursue a social security arrangement aimed at facilitating professional and workforce mobility between the two countries.

Defense cooperation emerged as a key pillar of the upgraded partnership. The sides signed a Letter of Intent on defense cooperation that is expected to support collaboration in defense technologies, industrial partnerships, research activities, and capacity building. According to the joint outcomes of the meeting, both countries intend to expand contacts between defense authorities and explore opportunities for cooperation in defense research, development, and industrial projects.

For Slovakia, a NATO and European Union member with a developed defense industrial base, the agreement opens additional opportunities for engagement with India's expanding defense manufacturing sector. The move also aligns with New Delhi's broader effort to deepen defense and technology partnerships across Central and Eastern Europe.

Technology cooperation was another major outcome of the visit. The two countries agreed to strengthen collaboration in artificial intelligence and advanced technologies, including the establishment of an Indian Council for Cultural Relations Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Košice. Additional academic cooperation will be supported through an agreement between IIT Delhi and the Slovak Technical University focused on student exchanges and joint research programs.

Economic cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions. Both governments identified advanced manufacturing, automotive production, railways, and green technologies as priority sectors for future collaboration. Leaders indicated that closer India-EU economic integration could further support bilateral trade and investment flows.

The upgraded partnership provides a new framework for cooperation across defense, technology, education, and industry, reflecting growing engagement between India and Central European partners at a time of increasing focus on supply chains, industrial resilience, and emerging technologies.
