Russian Geran-4 Drone Explodes in Moldova After Airspace Incursion
A suspected Russian Geran-4 drone exploded near a road in Moldova's Orhei district as three UAVs violated the country's airspace on September 30.
A suspected Russian Geran-4 drone crashed and exploded near a public road in Moldova's Orhei district on September 30, 2026, after entering the country's airspace during Russian attacks on Ukraine. Moldovan police recovered debris bearing Geran-4 markings, electronic components and a turbojet engine, with fragments scattered up to 120 meters from the explosion.
The incident was one of three unauthorized drone incursions recorded in Moldova that day. Two of the aircraft crashed and exploded on Moldovan territory, prompting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon Russia's ambassador-designate, Oleg Ozerov, on October 1.
Geran-4 Debris and Turbojet Engine Recovered Near Ivancea
According to Moldova's General Police Inspectorate, the drone apparently collided with trees before crashing and exploding near the G72 road between Ivancea and Brănești, approximately 10 meters from the roadway.
Investigators identified three craters at the site. The main crater measured approximately 50 centimeters in diameter and 30 centimeters in depth. The explosion also damaged trees within a radius of about 30 meters, while aircraft fragments were recovered up to 120 meters from the impact site.
The recovered components included rear wing sections bearing the Russian marking Geran-4, electronic modules and a turbojet engine showing signs of exposure to high temperatures.
The findings point to a jet-powered variant of Russia's Geran family of one-way attack drones. However, the police identification remains preliminary, and the recovered components have been submitted for further forensic examination.
No casualties were reported in connection with the Orhei incident. Authorities temporarily restricted road traffic while specialists examined the area and collected debris.
Three Drone Incursions Recorded on September 30
The incident near Ivancea followed two earlier unauthorized drone flights over Moldova on the same day.
The first occurred at approximately 05:43, when a drone entered Moldovan airspace and subsequently crashed and exploded near Hîrbovăț in Anenii Noi district.
A second unmanned aircraft was detected at 10:26 near Lunga in Dubăsari district. The authorities temporarily closed airspace over central and northern Moldova as the aircraft moved northward. It subsequently disappeared from monitoring systems near Arionești in Dondușeni district.
The third incident began at approximately 20:45, when an unauthorized aircraft crossed the border from the direction of Ukraine's Vinnytsia region toward the Transnistrian segment of Moldova.
According to Moldova's Ministry of Defense, the aircraft subsequently traveled toward Țipova in Rezina district before disappearing from surveillance systems near Brănești.
The central airspace restrictions imposed in response to the evening incident were lifted at 21:07.
Moldova Summons Russian Diplomat Over Airspace Violations
On October 1, Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russian ambassador-designate Oleg Ozerov and presented a formal note of protest over the three drone incursions.
Moldovan authorities stated that the country's airspace had been violated eight times over the preceding seven days. The ministry condemned the incidents and called on Russia to stop military actions that endanger Moldovan territory and its population.
Ozerov disputed the attribution of the drones to Russia and requested additional evidence. He also stated that Moscow was prepared to participate in a joint investigation.
The latest incidents add to Moldova's growing airspace security challenges as Russian strikes against Ukraine continue close to its borders.
As previously reported by AdriaDefense, Moldova and Romania have been exploring closer cooperation with Ukraine on drone interception, airspace protection and domestic counter-UAS production.
The discovery of suspected Geran-4 components provides additional evidence for Moldovan investigators examining the types of unmanned aircraft entering the country's airspace.
