Albania and Italy have reaffirmed plans to expand bilateral defense and security cooperation during talks between senior defense officials, underlining the strategic importance of the partnership for both countries and the wider Adriatic region.

According to Albanian authorities, discussions focused on strengthening collaboration across defense, maritime security, and defense-industrial development. Particular attention was given to cooperation in the Adriatic-Ionian area, the Western Balkans, and Southeast Europe, where both NATO allies share common security interests.

The meeting also reviewed progress in defense-industrial cooperation following a recently established partnership between Albania's state defense company KAYO and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The project is intended to support the production of military vessels in Albania and contribute to the modernization of the country's naval capabilities while expanding its domestic defense-industrial base.

The KAYO-Fincantieri agreement, signed earlier this year, foresees the development of naval vessel production at the Pashaliman naval facility. Albanian officials have described the initiative as part of a broader effort to build local industrial capacity and integrate the country more closely into European defense supply chains.

Beyond industrial cooperation, the two sides exchanged views on regional security challenges and NATO-related priorities. Officials also discussed preparations for a future NATO summit planned to take place in Tirana, with Albania already establishing organizational structures to support the event.

The latest discussions reflect a broader trend of expanding defense ties between Rome and Tirana. In recent years, the two countries have increased cooperation in maritime security, interoperability, training, and defense-industrial initiatives, reinforcing Italy's role as one of Albania's principal strategic partners within NATO and the Euro-Atlantic framework.
