Estonia has received its first IRIS-T SLM medium range air defense fire unit, with the system delivered to Ämari Air Base on June 22. The handover marks the first operational delivery under the Baltic country's long planned modernization of its ground based air defense network.

The system has been assigned to the Estonian Air Defence Wing and represents a major expansion of the country's ability to counter aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and other aerial threats at greater distances than its existing short range assets. According to Estonian officials, the capability is intended to strengthen the protection of military forces, critical infrastructure, and national airspace.

Estonia and Latvia launched the joint procurement program in 2023, signing a framework agreement with Germany's Diehl Defence for IRIS-T SLM systems. The acquisition was described by Estonian authorities as one of the country's largest defense procurement projects and forms part of broader efforts to reinforce NATO's integrated air and missile defense architecture along the Alliance's eastern flank.

IRIS-T SLM is a medium range surface to air missile system capable of engaging multiple airborne targets simultaneously. A standard fire unit includes a command post, surveillance radar, and multiple launchers equipped with ready to fire missiles. Previous deliveries to Germany have featured launchers carrying eight missiles each and radar coverage extending to approximately 250 kilometers, while the interceptor has an engagement range of about 40 kilometers.

The delivery comes as European countries continue expanding investments in ground based air defense following lessons from the war in Ukraine. Diehl Defence has reported growing demand for the IRIS-T family of systems and is increasing production capacity to support new European customers, including members of the European Sky Shield Initiative.
