Estonia is preparing to start construction of a military town in the eastern border city of Narva, marking another step in the country's broader effort to reinforce defense infrastructure and military presence near Russia. According to statements by Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur during a visit to Ida-Viru County, local authorities have agreed to support the project, allowing preparations to move forward in the coming months.

The ministry indicated that work on the project could begin this year, enabling the launch of a state procurement process for construction and the development of temporary facilities intended to support a rapid deployment of Estonian defense forces in the region.

Narva occupies a strategically important position on Estonia's eastern frontier. Estonian military officials have previously argued for a permanent military presence in the city, citing operational requirements and the need to strengthen the state's visibility in the border region. Earlier plans envisioned a base capable of hosting more than 200 personnel, including allied forces.

The military town initiative forms part of a wider defense investment program that includes border fortifications, new military facilities, and expansion of domestic defense-industrial capacity. Estonia has accelerated defense spending and infrastructure projects in response to the evolving security environment on NATO's eastern flank.

Officials also noted that the Narva project could generate economic activity in the region by attracting personnel and supporting local services, alongside its primary military function.
