The Council of the European Union has approved €10 million in additional funding for the Balkan Medical Task Force, strengthening the multinational unit's military medical capabilities and operational readiness across the Western Balkans.

The assistance measure, adopted on October 2 under the European Peace Facility, will finance equipment for field hospitals, military medical vehicles, and communication and information systems. Related supplies, services and technical training can also be funded under the package.

The new allocation raises total European Peace Facility support for the Balkan Medical Task Force to €16 million.

The Balkan Medical Task Force brings together Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. The multinational formation combines military medical personnel and capabilities from participating armed forces for international operations as well as responses to natural and human-made disasters.

Its core deployable capability is a NATO-certified Role 2 light maneuver field hospital, providing capabilities including emergency treatment, surgery, intensive care and outpatient care.

The European Union said the latest funding is intended to improve both the operational capabilities and readiness of the task force. The organization already participates in multinational military exercises aimed at improving interoperability between participating armed forces.

The latest package builds on a €6 million European Peace Facility assistance measure approved in June 2022. That first package financed mobility assets, Role 2 field hospital components, laboratory equipment, medical supplies and communication systems for participating military medical units.

Some of that equipment has since entered operational use. In July 2026, the Balkan Medical Task Force displayed European Peace Facility-funded Role 2 hospital equipment during a defense capabilities presentation at Ilinden Barracks in Skopje.

The task force was established as a multinational military medical formation in 2016. Its headquarters are in Skopje, while participating countries rotate responsibility for leadership and key operational capabilities.

The additional €10 million comes as European governments place greater emphasis on military medical readiness, deployable field infrastructure and the ability of armed forces to sustain personnel during high-intensity operations.

For the Western Balkans, the program also provides a common capability through which NATO and non-NATO armed forces in the region can train and operate using standardized multinational procedures.
