Romania Awards €2 Billion Contract for Short Range Air Defense Systems
Romania has signed a framework agreement worth more than €2 billion for new short range and very short range air defense systems supplied by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
Romania has signed a framework agreement valued at more than €2 billion for the acquisition of new short range air defense (SHORAD) and very short range air defense (VSHORAD) capabilities, marking a major step in the country's ongoing modernization of its integrated air and missile defense network.
The agreement was signed by the Romanian Ministry of National Defence's procurement agency, Romtehnica, with Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. According to the ministry, the acquisition process took four years to complete and is designed to improve Romania's ability to counter low altitude aerial threats, including drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and fixed wing aircraft.
Under the contract, Romania will receive six integrated SHORAD VSHORAD systems, comprising six SHORAD and six VSHORAD firing units. The package also includes ammunition, operator training and education systems, a simulation platform for crew qualification, and long term logistical support.
Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated that the new capability will serve as the final layer of protection against airborne threats that penetrate longer range air defense systems. The ministry indicated that the systems are intended to engage a broad range of targets, including unmanned aerial systems, loitering munitions, and other low flying threats that have become increasingly prominent in recent conflicts.
The procurement forms part of Romania's wider effort to strengthen NATO's eastern flank through investments in layered air defense. In recent years, Bucharest has expanded its air defense portfolio through acquisitions that include Patriot systems while also pursuing additional modernization programs across the armed forces.
