Royal Marines air defense teams support UK operations in Eastern Mediterranean
UK Royal Marines air defense specialists have been deployed in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean to support British military operations and regional force protection missions.
Royal Navy has confirmed that Royal Marines air defense specialists are supporting British military operations in Cyprus and across the Eastern Mediterranean.
According to the service, personnel from 30 Commando Information Exploitation Group have been involved in force protection tasks linked to regional deployments and military activity in the area. The teams are responsible for identifying and countering potential airborne threats, including drones and other low-altitude systems.
The deployment forms part of wider UK military operations operating from Cyprus, which continues to serve as a strategic hub for British activity in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean.
The Royal Navy stated that the air defense teams are equipped to detect, track, and assess aerial threats in support of deployed naval and joint forces. The mission also reflects the increasing operational emphasis NATO members are placing on counter-drone capabilities and layered air defense systems.
British forces have expanded regional monitoring and protection measures amid continued instability in the Eastern Mediterranean and broader Middle East security environment. Cyprus remains central to UK expeditionary operations, logistics, intelligence activity, and rapid response missions.
The deployment highlights growing demand for mobile short-range air defense capabilities as armed forces adapt to the increasing use of unmanned aerial systems in operational theaters.
