Saab Introduces New HEAT 758 Anti Tank Round for Carl-Gustaf

Saab has launched the HEAT 758, a new anti tank munition for the Carl-Gustaf recoilless rifle designed to improve lethality against modern armored threats. The round increases penetration and range while integrating with the company’s Firebolt programmable ammunition system.

Saab has unveiled a new anti tank munition for its Carl-Gustaf recoilless rifle family, introducing the HEAT 758 round as part of efforts to address increasingly advanced armored threats. The launch comes as European and NATO states continue to reassess ground combat capabilities and anti armor requirements following lessons from the war in Ukraine.

According to Saab, the HEAT 758 is intended to succeed and expand the capabilities of the existing HEAT 751 munition, which has been fielded for engagements against armored vehicles equipped with explosive reactive armor. The company stated that operational feedback and combat observations, including the performance of earlier Carl-Gustaf rounds in Ukraine, informed the new round’s development.

The new munition is designed to penetrate up to 700 mm of armor, compared with 500 mm for the previous HEAT 751 round, while extending effective firing range from 500 to 600 meters, Saab said. The company added that the round maintains a similar size and weight profile to the earlier munition, allowing infantry units to retain mobility without additional load burdens.

A central feature of the HEAT 758 is compatibility with Saab’s Firebolt programmable ammunition system for Carl-Gustaf. Firebolt enables ammunition to communicate directly with the launcher and sighting system, automatically applying ballistic data and fuze settings. Saab stated that this reduces operator workload, shortens engagement time, and lowers the risk of incorrect ammunition configuration under combat conditions.

The launch also reflects a broader trend across NATO land forces toward distributed anti armor capability at the squad level. Saab positions the Carl-Gustaf system as a weapon intended for widespread deployment among infantry formations rather than specialized anti tank units, allowing smaller units to maintain organic firepower against armored threats.

The HEAT 758 was officially presented during a Saab ground combat live fire event in Sweden attended by military representatives from multiple countries, according to company representatives.
