Sweden will deploy a Patriot air defense unit and around 100 military personnel to southeastern Poland from December, strengthening NATO protection of the Rzeszów logistics hub used to channel military and civilian support to Ukraine.

The deployment will mark the first time Sweden has sent its Patriot surface-to-air missile system on a NATO mission.

According to the Swedish Armed Forces, personnel from the Air Defence Regiment (Lv 6), supported by the Blekinge Air Wing (F 17), will operate the system. The Swedish contingent will serve under NATO command and contribute to the alliance's Integrated Air and Missile Defence.

The unit's primary task will be to protect the logistics hub in Rzeszów, a key node for the movement of Western military assistance into Ukraine under NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine, or NSATU.

Sweden plans to begin the mission in early December. The current mandate runs through the end of 2026, while the Swedish Armed Forces are preparing for the deployment to continue during the first half of 2027.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the deployment is intended to safeguard the flow of military and civilian support to Ukraine while strengthening NATO's eastern flank.

The Patriot deployment comes alongside a separate Swedish contribution of Gripen fighter aircraft to NATO operations over Poland. Swedish Gripens began their latest mission on October 1, supporting NATO air defense and helping protect the same logistics corridor.

The aircraft are mainly operating from bases in Sweden, supported by a smaller forward operating presence in Poland.

The two deployments give Sweden a combined fighter and ground-based air defense role on NATO's eastern flank as the alliance strengthens protection of infrastructure supporting Ukraine.

Layered air defense around Rzeszów

The Rzeszów-Jasionka area has become one of NATO's most important logistics points since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Poland says more than 80% of military donations destined for Ukraine transit through the country, making protection of the hub a priority for NATO air and missile defense forces.

Dutch forces are currently contributing Patriot batteries, NASAMS and counter-drone systems to the protection of the area. Poland also operates its own air defense assets around the hub, including Mała Narew systems equipped with CAMM missiles.

The Netherlands began its current mission in December 2025 and has extended its Patriot deployment through December 2026.

Sweden's upcoming deployment adds another NATO ally with Patriot capability to the defense of the logistics corridor at a time when eastern-flank air defense has taken on increasing importance.

The Swedish Armed Forces said the Patriot mission will involve approximately 100 personnel and will operate under NATO Air Command.
